Gelderland has 139 museums across 67 towns, and two of the most visited in the country.
The Kröller-Müller Museum sits in the middle of the Hoge Veluwe National Park at Otterlo, holds the second largest Van Gogh collection in the world, and has a sculpture garden of twenty-five hectares behind it. You reach it by white bicycle across the heath, which is part of the experience rather than an inconvenience.
Twenty minutes away, the Nederlands Openluchtmuseum in Arnhem rebuilds the whole country in 44 hectares. Sixty-six of the 139 accept the Museumcard, and five open every day.
The Kröller-Müller sits inside the Hoge Veluwe National Park, so you pay to enter the park as well as the museum, and the free white bicycles are the normal way to cross it. The Openluchtmuseum is largely outdoors and its full programme is seasonal. Both reward a dry day.
