IJmuiden sits at the mouth of the North Sea Canal, which shapes what makes sense on a day ashore. Haarlem is the closest city by some margin and the most underrated option from this berth. The times below already include an allowance for traffic.
Volendam and Marken are about an hour to an hour and a quarter each way, because everything has to route around the North Sea Canal and the Amsterdam ring rather than cutting straight across. The Hague, Delft and Scheveningen are a similar distance to the south. All of these work on a long call, but they are not quick hops.
Two honest exclusions. Kinderdijk is about 105 km from IJmuiden and Giethoorn about 150 km, so both mean three to four hours in the car before you have seen anything. From this berth we would point you at Haarlem, Zaanse Schans or Amsterdam instead. One practical note worth knowing: almost every route out of IJmuiden uses the Velsertunnel, so we plan around its closure schedule and keep a second route in reserve.

Many larger ocean ships berth at the Felison Cruise Terminal in IJmuiden rather than in central Amsterdam. Docking here avoids the IJmuiden sea locks and the long canal passage into the city, which can save several hours, and the very widest ships cannot pass the central lock at all. Ocean ships berth at the Felison Cruise Terminal, Cruiseboulevard 10, 1976 EB IJmuiden, on the North Sea coast where the North Sea Canal meets the sea. It is a compact, modern terminal, so getting off your ship is quick and painless.
It is worth being straight with you about the location. Felison sits on its own, well away from anything, and there is nothing to see or do at the terminal itself. IJmuiden town is a good half hour on foot and not really worth the walk on a short call. There is no railway station either. The only public transport link to Amsterdam is a bus, and while taxis can stop nearby, they are not always waiting. This is the big practical difference between IJmuiden and Amsterdam’s Passenger Terminal, and it is why we meet you at the terminal door rather than leaving you to work out local transport with the clock running.
Once you have transport sorted, though, the position is excellent. Haarlem, the Zaanse Schans windmills and Amsterdam itself are all comfortably within reach of a normal port call, and you are heading out through open countryside rather than crawling out of a city.
