As Winter turns to Spring, swathes of brightly coloured daffodils start appearing in the vast flower fields across the Netherlands. This glorious golden carpet marks the start of flower season, and the vibrant tulip blooms quickly follow. At the end of March, Keukenhof flower gardens open their gates for another year, welcoming over a million visitors. Here’s why Keukenhof should be at the top of your travel list:
Keukenhof boasts a rich history that stretches back to the 15th century, when it served as hunting grounds for the noble estate of Teylingen Castle. However, in 1949, a group of leading Dutch bulb growers and exporters transformed these historic grounds into the largest and most famous flower gardens in the world.
The gardens now cover an area of 32 hectares (79 acres). They showcase products from 100 participating companies. This is achieved through the hand-planting of 7 million bulbs. The planting starts at the beginning of the previous October and is completed by early December.
Keukenhof not only feature spectacular tulips, but also a fantastic collection of other flowers, including hyacinths, daffodils, roses, irises, and lilies in an overwhelming variety of shapes and colours.
This lovely Dutch windmill, known as the Tower mill, was built in 1892 and given to Keukenhof Gardens in 1975. Its impressive 17.9m sails still turn today. You can enter the mill, and if you climb the steps to the balcony, you will be rewarded with a spectacular view of the Lisse tulip fields and Keukenhof Gardens.
Located within the Willem-Alexander glasshouse, the Tulip Pavilion bursts with dazzling thousands of tulips in (almost) every colour imaginable. Come rain or shine, this pavilion showcases tulips from the very first day the garden opens. A perfect spot to escape a drizzly day and bask in floral beauty.
As you walk along the winding paths of this unique Japanese-style garden, you’ll see colourful flowers and ornamental trees. A pretty bridge adds to the charm, while the gentle trickle of water creates a calm and peaceful feel.
This hedge maze, with its dense greenery and winding paths, is full of twists and surprises. At its heart, a raised platform offers a stunning view over the labyrinth, the vibrant tulip fields beyond, and even glimpses of Keukenhof’s grand gardens.
Situated on the large lake is a charming lily pad garden, featuring a pathway of artificial lily pads. These wooden ‘stepping stones’ sit just below the water’s surface, creating the illusion that you’re effortlessly ‘walking on water’—a magical sight for any onlookers.
Keukenhof is more than just a garden—it’s a breathtaking celebration of spring, bursting with colour and beauty. Wander through endless tulip fields, admire stunning floral displays, and soak in the serenity of its lakes and charming pavilions.
So, why wait? Explore the world’s most spectacular spring garden and see for yourself why it’s an absolute must-visit destination.

Visitors can explore thousands of blooming varieties, browse high quality bulbs approved for travel, and enjoy creative flower inspired artworks. Friendly, informative, and beautifully presented, it is a perfect addition to any day trip in the Keukenhof area.
Keukenhof Castle brings a calm and historic atmosphere to the region, with elegant architecture, old trees, and peaceful walking paths that offer a welcome break from the vibrant flower fields.
Nearby, the Lisser Museum provides a clear and engaging look at local history through well chosen artworks and displays. Together they add cultural depth to any visit in the Keukenhof area.
The Keukenhof is located in Lisse, about 35 kilometres from Amsterdam. By car the drive takes around 35 to 45 minutes, but on sunny weekends or during peak tulip season it can take longer due to heavy traffic near the park and limited parking spaces. Leaving early in the morning is the best way to avoid long queues on the roads and at the parking area.
If you travel by public transport you can take a train from Amsterdam to Schiphol Airport or Amsterdam RAI and then connect to the Keukenhof Express bus. From Amsterdam RAI the journey is usually 35 to 45 minutes, from Schiphol around 30 minutes. On busy days buses can be full, so buying a combined bus and entry ticket in advance helps you skip extra queues and guarantees your timed entry.
The Keukenhof is open every year from late March to mid May. The best time to visit is generally from mid April to early May when the tulips are in full bloom. Blooming times depend on the weather, so mid season is the safest choice for colourful gardens and surrounding flower fields.
If you are not there in Tulip Season, look at our All Year Round Flower Tour, where we can give you flowers the whole year.
Most visitors spend between three and four hours in the park. This gives you enough time to walk through the main gardens, visit the pavilions and take photos. If you also want to explore the flower fields by bike or boat, plan for at least half a day or more. Our private tours are at least 6 hours so we have enough time to see the Keukenhof and the surrounding fields.
Yes, you can see tulip fields outside the Keukenhof. The park is surrounded by farmland where millions of tulips, hyacinths and daffodils are grown. Inside the Keukenhof you will find the landscaped flower gardens, pavilions and creative floral displays and not to forget a windmill. Outside the park you can explore the blooming fields by bike, on foot or by a whisper boat tour.
It is strongly recommended to buy tickets online in advance. The Keukenhof works with timed entry slots, and popular dates often sell out. Buying tickets at the entrance is still possible, but availability is not guaranteed. With an online ticket you skip the ticket line and walk straight into the park.
If you book a tour to the Keukenhof with us, we will take care of the tickets.
April and May are spring months in the Netherlands. Expect mild temperatures between 10 and 20 degrees Celsius (50 to 70 Fahrenheit). April can feel fresh, especially in the morning, and occasional rain showers are common. May is usually slightly warmer and sunnier and temperatures can go up. Layers, a rain jacket and comfortable shoes are recommended as most of the visit takes place outdoors.
Raindrops on the tulips make them even more beautiful.
