Den Bosch has 11 museums, and the painter it is named for left almost nothing behind in it.

Hieronymus Bosch was born here, worked here and died here in 1516, and not one of his paintings remains in the city. The Jheronimus Bosch Art Center solves this the only way possible, with full-size reproductions of every known work in one place, which turns out to be the only way to see them all anyway.

Four of the 11 accept the Museumcard. None open every day.

The main collections

  • Noordbrabants Museum. The provincial museum of Brabant, and the strongest collection in the city.
  • Design Museum Den Bosch. Design and visual culture, in a building next door to the Noordbrabants.
  • Jheronimus Bosch Art Center. Every Bosch, reproduced full size, in a converted church.
  • Museum Slager. Three generations of one painting family, in their own house.
  • Groot Tuighuis. The city’s archaeology, in a sixteenth-century arsenal.

The smaller ones

  • Bastionder. The fortifications, explained from inside a bastion.
  • Het Zwanenbroedershuis. The medieval Brotherhood of Our Lady, whose members included Bosch himself.
  • Nationaal Carnavalsmuseum. Oeteldonk, the alter ego the city adopts every February, taken entirely seriously.
  • Museum De Bouwloods. The stone workshop that keeps Sint-Jan standing.
  • Kruithuis and Bolwerk Sint-Jan. More of the defensive ring.

Before you go

None of the eleven open seven days a week. The Zwanenbroedershuis in particular keeps very restricted hours, and several sites are seasonal.
