Nijmegen has eight museums, and roughly two thousand years of city to fit into them.

Along with Maastricht, Nijmegen claims to be the oldest city in the Netherlands, and the Roman evidence is substantial: this was Ulpia Noviomagus, with a legionary fortress on the hill. The Valkhof Museum holds what came out of the ground, including the Roman glass and silver that make it a national collection rather than a local one.

Three of the eight accept the Museumcard. None open every day.

The main collections

  • Valkhof Museum. Roman Nijmegen and old master painting, on the site of the imperial palace.
  • De Bastei. The Waal river, its nature and the city’s relationship with it, built into the old river wall.
  • Velorama. The national bicycle museum, which in the Netherlands is a more serious proposition than it sounds. Two hundred years of machines, on the waterfront.

The smaller ones

  • muZIEum. Sight and blindness, experienced in the dark with a guide who is blind. Genuinely unlike anything else.
  • Huis van de Nijmeegse Geschiedenis. The city’s history, free to enter.
  • Infocentrum WO2 Nijmegen. The 1944 bombing and Operation Market Garden.
  • Stevenskerk. The great church, with a tower you can climb.
  • Commanderie van Sint Jan. A medieval hospital building, now exhibitions.
