Overijssel has 84 museums across 34 towns, and an unusually even spread of them.
Four Hanseatic towns along the IJssel, Zwolle, Kampen, Deventer and Hasselt, carry their own collections from when this was a trading region facing east. Behind them is Twente, industrial and textile country, with Enschede at its centre. Between the two sits Giethoorn, which most visitors reach by boat.
Thirty-eight of the 84 accept the Museumcard. Only one opens every day.
The IJssel towns are close together and connected by train, which makes Zwolle, Kampen and Deventer a comfortable two days. Twente needs a car. Only one of the 84 opens every day, and the heritage railway runs seasonally.
