The province of Utrecht has 80 museums across 33 towns, and the highest concentration of castles in the country.
Nineteen of the 80 are in Utrecht itself. The rest are spread across a small province that was, for centuries, where wealthy Amsterdammers built their country houses. Kasteel de Haar at Haarzuilens is the largest castle in the Netherlands, rebuilt by Cuypers with the village moved out of the way to make room for the garden.
Thirty-four of the 80 accept the Museumcard. Four open every day.
Utrecht province is small and central, which makes it the easiest province to reach from anywhere in the Randstad. The castles are largely seasonal and several close entirely in winter, so check before travelling out of season. Note that the city of Utrecht has its own page.
