Museums in Utrecht

Utrecht has 19 museums, and an unusually high proportion of them are things you will not find anywhere else.

A national railway museum in a working nineteenth-century station. A collection of self-playing musical instruments that are demonstrated rather than displayed. A house by Gerrit Rietveld that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and holds eight people at a time. An archaeological excavation you walk through under the cathedral square.

Eleven of the 19 accept the Museumcard. Two open every day. Utrecht rewards booking ahead more than most Dutch cities, because several of its best museums are small enough to sell out.

The ones most visitors come for

• Centraal Museum. The city’s principal museum: art, fashion, design and the history of Utrecht, including the largest Rietveld collection in the world.
• Het Spoorwegmuseum. The national railway museum, in the old Maliebaan station. One of the best museums in the country for children and better than adults expect.
• Museum Speelklok. Self-playing musical instruments, played for you on a guided round. It is a performance rather than a display case.
• Rietveld Schröder House. The 1924 house that De Stijl produced, and a World Heritage Site. Timed entry, small groups, book ahead.
• Museum Catharijneconvent. The national collection of Christian art and heritage, in a medieval convent.

Worth going out of your way for

• DOMunder. An underground archaeological site beneath Dom Square, showing two thousand years of the city in situ.
• Nijntje Museum. The Miffy Museum, built for under-sixes and done with real care. Dick Bruna was a Utrecht man.
• Sonnenborgh. A working observatory on a sixteenth-century bastion.
• Paleis Lofen. The remains of an imperial palace, under a building in the middle of the city.
• Museumwerf Utrecht. A working yard restoring historic inland vessels.

A day of museums in Utrecht

Morning, the centre

Utrecht’s old city is small and almost everything is walkable. Start at the Centraal Museum, then walk ten minutes to Museum Speelklok, which runs on demonstration times rather than open browsing, so check the schedule and build the morning around it rather than the other way round.

Afternoon, out to Rietveld

The Rietveld Schröder House is a twenty minute walk or a short bus ride east, and entry is by timed slot in small groups. Book it before you travel, not on the day. It takes about an hour including the introduction, and seeing it after the Centraal Museum’s Rietveld collection makes far more sense than the reverse.

With children

The Spoorwegmuseum can absorb most of a day on its own. If you have younger children, the Miffy Museum is ten minutes away and pitched precisely at them.

If it rains

DOMunder is underground by definition, and Speelklok, the Centraal Museum and Catharijneconvent are all within a few streets of each other.

Before you go

• Book the Rietveld Schröder House well ahead. Groups are tiny, entry is timed, and turning up on the day rarely works.
• Museum Speelklok runs on demonstration times. Arriving between them means seeing instruments that are not playing, which is most of the point missed.
• Only two of the 19 open every day. Monday closures are the norm.
• Eleven take the Museumcard, including the Centraal Museum, the Spoorwegmuseum, Speelklok and Catharijneconvent.
