Why more Amsterdam cruises now call at IJmuiden

From 2026 the city of Amsterdam is reducing the number of ocean cruise ships allowed at the central Passenger Terminal Amsterdam, with a reported cap of around 100 sea cruise calls per year and a single berth available per day. As a result, a growing number of large ocean ships now dock at the Felison Cruise Terminal in IJmuiden or at Coenhaven, west of the city centre. Longer term, the city plans to move the central cruise terminal away from the IJ waterfront. This is why a combined Netherlands calendar – covering Amsterdam, Rotterdam and IJmuiden together, is the most reliable way to see when and where a particular ship will actually dock.

Docking in the Netherlands? How to spend your day in port

If your ship is calling at Amsterdam, IJmuiden or Rotterdam, you usually have one full day in port – and it is easily enough for cruise ship visitors to see the highlights. From the Passenger Terminal Amsterdam you can walk straight into the city centre. From IJmuiden it is 45 to 60 minutes to central Amsterdam, and from Rotterdam you are right in the heart of that city. Popular shore excursions include Amsterdam’s canals and museums, the windmills at Zaanse Schans, the tulip gardens at Keukenhof (in season) and the historic town of Haarlem.

Because cruise calls are short, the safest way for cruise passengers to make the most of their day is a private shore excursion built around your exact hours in port, with a guaranteed return to the ship on time. We tailor every cruise tour to your ship’s schedule, whatever your port.

Popular choices for a day in port include Amsterdam in a Day, the Amsterdam City Highlights tour, the windmills of Zaanse Schans and, in spring, the Keukenhof tulip gardens. Need to reach your ship or the airport? See our private transfers and chauffeur service.

In 2026 the Dutch sea cruise ports welcome a wide range of ocean ships, including Celebrity Eclipse, the Viking ocean fleet (Viking Vela, Saturn, Jupiter, Neptune and more), Holland America’s Nieuw Statendam and Rotterdam, several MSC ships (Preziosa, Virtuosa, Euribia, Magnifica), AIDA ships (AIDAperla, AIDAnova, AIDAprima), TUI Cruises’ Mein Schiff fleet, Cunard’s Queen Anne, Queen Victoria and Queen Mary 2, P&O’s Ventura, Britannia, Arcadia, Iona and Aurora, plus Princess, Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, Disney, Costa, Oceania, Regent Seven Seas, Seabourn, Silversea, Crystal, Windstar, Azamara, Phoenix Reisen and others. The calendar above shows the complete list with dates and ports.
Where do cruise ships dock in Amsterdam?
Ocean cruise ships in Amsterdam berth at the Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA) on the Piet Heinkade, a short walk from Amsterdam Central Station. Because of the city’s 2026 limits on cruise calls, many larger ships now dock instead at the Felison Cruise Terminal in IJmuiden (45 to 60 minutes away) or at Coenhaven. Always check the calendar to see the exact port for each ship.
What time do cruise ships arrive and leave?
Most ocean ships arrive in the early morning (often 6am-8am) and depart the same evening (typically 5pm-10pm), though some stay overnight. Each entry in the calendar shows the scheduled arrival and departure time for that specific call. These times are indicative and set by the ship’s agent, confirm with your cruise line before travelling.
How far is IJmuiden (Felison Cruise Terminal) from Amsterdam?
The Felison Cruise Terminal in IJmuiden is 45 to 60 minutes from central Amsterdam by car, plus there are bus and shuttle connections. It sits on the North Sea Canal close to the beach and the locks at IJmuiden, and can accommodate ocean ships of up to 295 metres.
Where is the Rotterdam cruise terminal?
Cruise Terminal Rotterdam is at Wilhelminakade 699 on the Kop van Zuid, the historic departure quay of the Holland America Line next to Hotel New York. It is within walking distance of Rotterdam’s city centre and is also served by the Rotterdam water taxi.
Which cruise lines call at the Dutch ports?
Lines calling in 2026 include Holland America Line, Celebrity Cruises, Viking, MSC Cruises, AIDA Cruises, TUI Cruises (Mein Schiff), Cunard, P&O Cruises, Princess Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, Disney Cruise Line, Costa Cruises, Oceania Cruises, Regent Seven Seas, Seabourn, Silversea, Crystal, Windstar, Azamara, Ponant, Swan Hellenic, Fred Olsen, Ambassador Cruise Line and Phoenix Reisen.
Can I watch the cruise ships from shore?
Yes. In Amsterdam the ships are very visible along the IJ waterfront near the PTA; in Rotterdam you can see them from the Kop van Zuid and the Erasmus Bridge area; and in IJmuiden the ships pass through the canal and locks, which are a popular spot for ship-spotting. The terminals themselves are secured areas for embarking passengers only.
Is there parking at the cruise terminals?
Yes. The Felison Cruise Terminal in IJmuiden offers cruise parking that you can reserve in advance, and both Amsterdam and Rotterdam have parking near their terminals. Check each terminal’s own website for current rates and reservations.
How do I get from the cruise terminal to the city centre?
From Amsterdam’s PTA it is a short walk or tram ride to Central Station and the city centre. From Rotterdam’s terminal the centre is a walk, water-taxi or short tram ride away. From IJmuiden, central Amsterdam is 45 to 60 minutes by car, bus or shuttle.
Are the arrival and departure times guaranteed?
No. All times are indicative and set by the ships’ agents as a guideline. They can change due to weather, tides, lock schedules or itinerary changes. Always confirm the latest times with your cruise line or booking agency before departure.
