Discover Rotterdam and South Holland on a Private Shore Excursion

If your ship calls at Rotterdam, our private shore excursions are the relaxed, personal way to explore. The Rotterdam Cruise Terminal sits on the Wilhelminakade in the Kop van Zuid, right in the heart of this bold, modern city and within walking distance of its most striking sights. We meet you at the terminal with a friendly local guide and private transport, build the day around your ship’s schedule and guarantee a return to the port in good time. It is the easiest way for cruise passengers to see the real Rotterdam, and cruise ship visitors can even combine the city with Delft or the Kinderdijk windmills in a single day ashore.

Rotterdam is a port of contrasts, a city rebuilt with daring architecture, yet surrounded by some of the most traditional corners of Holland. From the cruise terminal you can admire the Erasmus Bridge, the Cube Houses and the Markthal, or drive out to the UNESCO windmills of Kinderdijk, the painterly streets of Delft and the palaces of The Hague. Whatever you choose, the tour is private to your group and shaped entirely around you. Why not browse some of the most popular locations in the Netherlands for tour ideas and inspiration?

If you have any questions about our Rotterdam shore excursions, please just contact us for the answers you need.

I cannot say enough great things about out tours with Amsterdam Experiences! I had the chance to do Anne Frank's last walk, Pronk Tulip Experience, a welcome walk around the city, Canal Cruise with cheese tasting, Delft Pottery painting, a walk around the city of Gouda with a sirrupwafel factory tour and a guided tour at the Rijk museum. As a travel advisor, I was blown away with the professionalism and meaningful touches that they added to our trip. It was so memorable, and I know my clients are in great hands with Amsterdam Experiences. Thank you to Stephan and Katherine for being wonderful guides!

Right from the start we were very impressed with the response to our request. We were looking for a private 5 hour bike and Rijks museum tour with transportation from our cruise ship which was docked in Ijmuiden. Everything went smooth and easy. The bike tour was lot of fun. We stopped for waffles and coffee and saw all the important highlights. Then we had a quick but amazing tour of the Rijks Museum. Our guide Michael was fantastic, fun and extremely knowledgable on the art and the history of Amsterdam. The only thing is that we wish we had more time. Thanks for a wonderful tour Michael and Kathrine for organizing everything!

Wonderful Van Gogh museum private tour Kaleigh was a fabulous guide. Energetic - knowledgeable and pitched it perfectly with lots of fun facts. She picked us up at our hotel and took us on the short tram ride ( so we also learned to ride a tram which was great) before arriving at the museum. Two hours was perfect and we could ask her anything as it was just the two of us. Completely immersed us in Van Gogh’s world and she must have been there many times but she had the va va voom of someone who truly loves what they do and we felt lucky to have had her guide us. Great company- everything worked like clockwork with reminders and clear guidance on times and where to meet. So glad we treated ourselves to the private tour option too.

I met Stephan recently at travel agent industry event and just so happened I was bringing my family to Amsterdam for a day with no set plans! It was like it was fate that we met :) Stephan was quick to give me a professional itinerary that met my family's needs. He was also open to changes as needed as we were coming in on an overnight flight and knew my kids would be jetlagged. We had a wonderful day at Keukenhof gardens, walking tour with wonderful food stops in Amsterdam and a canal cruise on the cutest private vessel with drinks. His attention to detail was great - even giving my kids a traditional chocolate easter egg in the morning (our tour was on Easter). Everything was spot on! I plan to use his services for my client's needs as well in the future!

Hey you. Yes, you, you beautiful global traveler scouring the internet for tips and tricks ahead of your Amsterdam adventure. Well, congratulations. You found it. THE best tour and experiences company in all the Netherlands. My wife and I have just recently returned from a kid-free excursion to tulip country and let me say, Kathrine and the team at Amsterdam Experiences, helped orchestrate the most perfect getaway. From the private canal cruise aboard the stunning S.S. Lucy (Cheers to Capt Matthijs for hot mulled wine and delicious cheese!), to a bespoke guided tour of the Van Gogh museum by fellow CO native Kaleigh (So cheerful and knowledgeable!), to the unforgettable, personalized tour of the Red Light District from our new friend (and honorary Mayor of the area) Simon…we truly had the best trip as each person fully embraced us with local hospitality and the unmistakeable feeling of gezellig. We can’t wait to return. So, in summary, Kathrine rocks, her guides rock, Amsterdam double rocks, and you’ll be rocking too when you plan your visit with Amsterdam Experiences.

Did two tours with this company and they were both SUPERB. Easy to set up, and get the information we needed. They picked us up at our hotel, and provided us with great photography tours of Amsterdam both during the day and at night. The tour guide was very knowledgeable, professional and helpful. Highly recommend this tour company!

Our group of 8 people just returned from a northern Europe holiday, which included several days in Amsterdam prior to a Baltic cruise. We were fortunate to have Bespoke Amsterdam Experiences make all of our tour and transportation arrangements for us. They planned 3 days of various types of tours, including a bicycle tour, private VIP canal boat tour (with happy hour), a half day trip to Zaanse Schans windmills, Anne Frank House, and a tour of The Hague. We all really enjoyed each tour. Everything was completely personalized for our group. The guides, Jeroen, Guido and Kaleigh were the real highlight of each individual excursion. They were all knowledgable, informative and fun! We hope to return to Amsterdam again and will definitely book future plans through Bespoke Amsterdam Experiences.

Jewish tour and Anne Frank House We were looking forward to going to the Anne Frank Museum, but found that it was so heavily booked, that we couldn’t have fitted it in before we left Amsterdam. A lovely couple on another experience (the early morning canal cruise with Captain Dave - we highly recommend) gave us a link to this experience with Stephan or Vince and it turned out to be perfect. The experience included a walk through the original Jewish area of Amsterdam and our tour guide, Vince, was extremely knowledgeable, taking us on a wonderful 2.5 hour journey before escorting us to the Anne Frank Museum, where were were virtually next in line. We are so happy that we found this tour and can highly recommend it.

Canal Cruise In An Open Boat With Beer Tasting It is easy for a solo traveler to feel alone from time to time so it was very nice to be a part of a small group of different people with different backgrounds and feel like "friends" even just for a short while. What I really liked was that Stephan let everyone to introduce him/her-self at the beginning. I´ve done group cruise rides in Prague and Utrecht before, but this one was completely different. We started and also ended a bit further from the craze of the city centre what made it much calmer, but also went to the main canal district. Stephan is a very kind person, you can feel the positive vibes on the board. He is also ready to answer any of your questions. We tasted at least 10 different beers and he gave us a little bit of background info about all of them. I even went for another beer at the end of the cruise with two other solo traveler ladies what was a super nice bonus for me.

A central port you can walk straight out of

The Rotterdam Cruise Terminal sits on the Wilhelminakade, on the Wilhelminapier beside the River Maas, right among the city’s striking modern architecture. The landmark Hotel New York is on your doorstep, and it is a flat 20 minute walk across the Erasmus Bridge into the centre, or a single stop on the metro. Unlike IJmuiden, you are in the heart of the city the moment you step ashore.

If you are arriving on a river cruise rather than an ocean ship, find my river cruise matches your line and dates to the ship and its berth, and the live ship tracker shows where it is right now.

Why your ship docks at Rotterdam

Rotterdam is Europe’s largest port, but you would never know it from the cruise terminal. Your ship berths on the Wilhelminapier in the Kop van Zuid, in the middle of the city rather than out among the container cranes. That is rare. Most big working ports put passengers miles from anywhere and hand them a shuttle bus. In Rotterdam you walk down the gangway and you are already there, with the Erasmus Bridge, the Markthal and the Cube Houses all within easy reach.

Rotterdam handles two kinds of call. Some ships stop for the day on a North Sea or Baltic itinerary, giving you eight to ten hours ashore. Others use Rotterdam as a turnaround port, where one set of passengers leaves in the morning and a new set boards that afternoon. If yours is a turnaround call, you often have a free day either side of the sailing, which is plenty of time for Kinderdijk or Delft before you board.

The Rotterdam Cruise Terminal

Ships berth at the Rotterdam Cruise Terminal on the Wilhelminakade, on the Wilhelminapier. The building is the old Holland America Line departure hall, which is why the quayside feels more like a piece of city architecture than a working dock.

There is a proper terminal building to arrive into, and taxis can stop nearby. Wilhelminaplein metro station is a five minute walk and puts you in the centre in a single stop, and the water taxi across the Maas is a nicer way to reach the old harbour at Veerhaven. Hotel New York, the former Holland America headquarters, is on the same pier if you fancy a coffee before you set off. We meet you at the terminal, so there is nothing to arrange and no shuttle to hunt for.

Where a day ashore from Rotterdam can take you

Rotterdam is the gateway to some of Holland’s finest day trips. The signature excursion is Kinderdijk, with its 19 UNESCO World Heritage windmills, often combined with the canal city of Delft, home of Royal Delft pottery and Vermeer, or The Hague, where the Mauritshuis holds Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring. Closer to the ship you can explore Rotterdam itself: the Cube Houses, the spectacular Markthal, the Erasmus Bridge and the historic harbour of Delfshaven.

Getting from Rotterdam to the rest of Holland

Because the port is so central, a great deal is within reach of a single day ashore:

– Kinderdijk windmills: about 20 minutes by road
– Delft: about 20 minutes
– The Hague and Scheveningen: about 30 minutes
– Gouda: about 40 minutes
– Amsterdam: about an hour

Those are driving times in normal traffic, and we build a comfortable margin into every itinerary. Amsterdam is perfectly possible from Rotterdam, though it makes for a long day, so we tend to suggest it only when you have a late sailing.

Private, flexible and shaped around you

Every tour is private to your group and built around what you want to see, your pace and your interests. Your guide is more of a friend for the day, sharing the stories and corners of South Holland that the big coach tours simply miss.

Back at your ship in good time

Whether you stay in Rotterdam or venture out to Kinderdijk, Delft or The Hague, we plan the whole day around your sailing time, with a comfortable margin, so you are always back on the Wilhelminakade in good time.

What you get with a shore excursion from Rotterdam

– A friendly local guide who meets you right at the terminal
– Walking tours from the door, or private transport further afield
– A flexible, private itinerary just for your group
– Kinderdijk windmills, Delft, The Hague or Rotterdam architecture
– A guaranteed return to your ship with time to spare

See our 2026 & 2027 Ocean Cruise Calendar for every scheduled ship call at Amsterdam, IJmuiden and Rotterdam.

Frequently Asked Questions Shore Excursions

Where do cruise ships dock in Rotterdam?

Cruise ships dock at the Rotterdam Cruise Terminal on the Wilhelminakade, in the Kop van Zuid district right in the city centre. It is within walking distance of Rotterdam’s main sights, and we meet you directly at the terminal.

What can I see on a Rotterdam shore excursion?

A great deal. Popular options include modern Rotterdam with its Erasmus Bridge and Cube Houses, the UNESCO windmills of Kinderdijk, the historic city of Delft, The Hague with the Mauritshuis, and the cheese city of Gouda. We tailor the day to your interests and your ship’s timetable.

How far is Kinderdijk from the Rotterdam Cruise Terminal?

The Kinderdijk windmills are only a short drive (20 minutes) from the Rotterdam Cruise Terminal, which makes them one of the most popular shore excursions from the port. You can combine them with Rotterdam itself or with a nearby historic town.

Can I visit Amsterdam from Rotterdam on a shore excursion?

Yes, if your ship is in port for a full day. Amsterdam is about an hour from Rotterdam by road, so a full-day private shore excursion to the capital is possible. For shorter calls we usually recommend Rotterdam, Kinderdijk, Delft, Gouda or The Hague, which are closer.

Will I get back to my ship on time?

Always. We plan every Rotterdam shore excursion around your departure with a generous time buffer and keep track of the time throughout, so you return to the Rotterdam Cruise Terminal comfortably before the ship sails.

Are Rotterdam shore excursions private and tailored?

Yes. Every shore excursion from the Rotterdam Cruise Terminal is private to your group and fully customisable. You choose the destinations and the pace, and your guide shapes the day around what you most want to see.

Which cruise lines call at Rotterdam?

In 2026 the following cruise lines docked at the Cruise Terminal Rotterdam (CTR): AIDA Cruises, Ambassador Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Costa Cruises, Crystal Cruises, Cunard Line, Disney Cruise Line, Fred Olsen Cruise Lines, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, Holland America Line, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises, P&O Cruises, Princess Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, Silversea Cruises and TUI Cruises.

See our Ocean Cruise Calendar for every scheduled ship call at Rotterdam, Amsterdam and IJmuiden. Interested in river cruises into Amsterdam or Zaandam? See our River Cruise Calendar. For more on Dutch cruise ports, read our article on Amsterdam’s cruise terminals.

Is Rotterdam a turnaround port for cruise ships?

Yes. As well as day calls, Rotterdam is used as a turnaround port where cruises begin and end, so you may have a full day in the city before boarding or after disembarking. We can build a private tour around either, and drop you at the terminal or your hotel afterwards.

How do I get from Rotterdam Cruise Terminal to Schiphol Airport?

It is about an hour by road. We can arrange private transport between the terminal, your hotel and Schiphol, timed around your ship’s arrival or departure, so you are not juggling luggage on the train.
