Saga’s river ship Spirit of the Rhine often begins or ends its Rhine and Dutch itineraries here, so there is usually time to enjoy the city at a gentle pace before you board or after you step off. Saga does not publish a draught figure for its fleet. Most European river ships draw between 1.5 m and 2.1 m, with the majority between 1.6 m and 1.7 m.

Saga and the ship's captain decide whether a ship sails, not this page. This is water level information we receive from the official gauge services (PEGELONLINE, Rijkswaterstaat, BAFU), converted into navigable depth. A ship also changes its own draught by taking on or releasing ballast, and at high water the limit is bridge clearance rather than depth. Always check with your cruise line.
The Spirit of the Rhine calls here only a handful of times a year, so if your date is listed below it is worth booking early.

Saga ships berth centrally in Amsterdam. These are the quays used for Saga calls, each with a map so you know exactly where to meet:

Right on the IJ waterfront in the city centre, a 10 minute walk or one tram stop from Central Station. LP is your berth number, and “via Muziekgebouw” or “via Vriesseveem” simply tells you which walkway leads to your gangway.
With Saga, the first question is which kind of ship you are on, because the two arrive in completely different places. Spirit of the Rhine, Spirit of the Danube and Spirit of the Moselle are purpose built river ships carrying just 172 guests, and they come into Amsterdam itself on itineraries such as A Taste of the Netherlands, Amsterdam, Cologne and the Rhine Gorge, and Dutch Cities and Keukenhof Gardens in Spring. Spirit of the Lorelei joins them in 2027.
Spirit of Discovery and Spirit of Adventure are the ocean ships, all balcony and no more than 987 guests, and they do not dock in the city. On the Continental Easter Mini Break, for example, Spirit of Discovery ties up at IJmuiden from 08:00 until 20:00, with Keukenhof as the included excursion and Amsterdam offered only as a paid alternative. Twelve hours is a long day if it is planned well and a frustrating one if it is not.
Saga guests come with their own set of expectations, and reasonably so. Cruises are for the over fifties, with a travelling companion or family member accepted from forty, and travel to and from the port is part of the fare: a private chauffeur if you live within seventy five miles, a shared chauffeur from anywhere on the UK mainland, or a domestic flight with a car at each end. Gratuities are included on both fleets, and there are 109 single balcony cabins on each ocean ship, so a good number of guests are travelling solo.
The people who benefit most from a private day are usually those on the ocean ships wanting Amsterdam rather than the bulbfields, and solo travellers who would rather not be the odd number in a coach party.

Saga looks after its guests well, but a group excursion still moves at the group’s pace, which is almost never anybody’s own. There is a lot of standing about, and very little choice about where you stop.
On a private day we tailor the walking to what you are comfortable with and build in a sit-down wherever it makes sense: a bench by a canal, a proper cup of tea, a café with a view. If something interests you, you stay. If it does not, you move on.
A great many Saga guests travel solo, and a guide of your own makes that easier and more sociable rather than lonelier. Saga’s Spirit of the Rhine berths at the Passenger Terminal, a short transfer from the old town, so there is no long walk before your day begins.
