Things to Do in Scheveningen

Scheveningen – The Sparkling Seaside Jewel of the Netherlands

Visit Scheveningen, a charming coastal district of The Hague, where the refreshing sea breeze meets rich culture and history. Stroll along the wide, sandy beach lined with lively cafés and the iconic pier, complete with a Ferris wheel and bungee jump tower. Scheveningen is a place of contrasts—tranquil dunes and family-friendly promenades sit alongside vibrant nightlife and buzzing seasonal festivals.

Dating back to the 13th century, Scheveningen is one of the oldest fishing communities in the Netherlands. Originally a humble village reliant on the North Sea for its livelihood, it gradually transformed into a fashionable seaside resort in the 19th century.

Here’s why Scheveningen should be at the top of your travel list:

Stroll Along The Pier

Walk along the iconic Scheveningen Pier, complete with shops, cafés, and stunning sea views. For the brave, try the bungee jump or take a ride on the Ferris wheel over the waves.

Visit the Kurhaus Hotel

Explore the historic Grand Hotel Amrâth Kurhaus, a magnificent 19th-century palace by the sea, once frequented by European royalty, artists, and famous musicians. Opened in 1885, the Kurhaus quickly became a symbol of seaside luxury, hosting such celebrities as Empress Elisabeth of Austria, Winston Churchill, and Pablo Picasso.

Madurodam

Located 10 minutes away from Scheveningen, Madurodam is a charming miniature park in The Hague where the Netherlands comes to life in 1:25 scale. Explore meticulously crafted replicas of iconic Dutch landmarks, from traditional windmills and tulip fields to the canals of Amsterdam and Schiphol Airport. Interactive exhibits, moving models, and fun activities make it a delightful experience for visitors of all ages.

Beelden aan Zee Museum

Tucked into the dunes, the Museum Beelden aan Zee showcases an impressive collection of modern sculpture, with many exhibits themed around the human form.

Explore WW2 History in Atlantikwall Museum The Hague

Explore the hidden history of the Second World War at the Atlantikwall Museum The Hague, located in a restored German bunker near Scheveningen’s coastline. This fascinating museum offers a glimpse into the massive coastal defence system built by the Nazis, with original bunkers, tunnels, and exhibitions that bring wartime stories to life.

Have Some Beach Time

Scheveningen’s wide, sandy beach is perfect for sunbathing, swimming, or a relaxing seaside walk. Rent a sunbed, join a beach volleyball game, or sip a cocktail at one of the stylish beach clubs.

Try Freshly Caught Haring at the Beach - Scheveningen's Classic

Scheveningen is one of the busiest fishing ports on the Dutch coast, and the most honest thing you can eat here is haring – raw, lightly salted herring served with raw onion and pickles. The Dutch eat it the traditional way: hold it by the tail, tilt your head back, and lower it in. You can also ask for it on a small bread roll if you prefer. From late May onwards the Hollandse Nieuwe season begins, when the first and freshest catch of the year arrives – this is when haring is at its absolute best. Head to a haringkar on the boulevard or the harbour area for the freshest fish, eaten with a sea view. It is one of the most genuinely Dutch food experiences you can have, and Scheveningen is one of the best places in the country to do it.

How do you pronounce Scheveningen?

Scheveningen is famous among Dutch people for being almost impossible to pronounce if you are not a native speaker. The correct pronunciation sounds roughly like skhay ve ning en, with the first sound coming from the back of your throat. The sch is not pronounced like sh, but as a hard Dutch skh sound.

A fun local tip is that during the Second World War, Dutch people sometimes used the word Scheveningen to tell locals from non locals, because the pronunciation was such a giveaway. Do not worry though, locals are used to hearing many creative versions and will always appreciate the effort.

We booked a private tour with Stephan in Haarlem. I had been viewing his virtual tours for years, and it was a treat to meet him and have our own tour. We loved the pace of the tour, no rush, no crowds. We were able to walk many places in Haarlem, even had a beer in a church! I would highly recommend Stephan and his company.

Fabulous experience! Perfect experience!!! Sophia, our guide gave us such an informative background story leading up to Anne Frank’s hiding! We took the exact trip the family took to their hiding place in the house. The culmination was the virtual reality tour inside their house. It was incredible to see the original space with the actual furniture and belongings of the Frank family.

Ideal Way to End An Amazing Journey Amsterdam is an amazing city. It's fascinating and important place in European history, evidenced with the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, Anne Frank Haus, canal rides etc, make Amsterdam equal to, or better, than Paris, Rome, and London. In our five glorious days we thought we had done it all, so on our last day in Amsterdam and our trip, my wife booked the perfect ending with the Craft Beer Tour 🍺. First and foremost, our guide Michael, was far and above the best guide we had not just in Amsterdam, but our entire 18 day European trip. Not only was he the most, friendly and interesting, but his vast and expansive knowledge in not just the Amsterdam craft beer scene but in Dutch art, architecture, cultural history knew no bounds. Add to that, the best beers my wife and I have ever enjoyed, made this one of the highlights of our vacation. This established, we enthusiastically give our highest recommendation to Michael and we personally thank him for concluding our trip with an unexpected highlight of our amazing journey.
