About this museum guide

The Netherlands packs well over a thousand museums into one small country, and this guide lists every one of them that regularly opens its doors. Alongside world-famous names such as the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum and the Anne Frank House, you will find royal palaces, castles, windmill and waterworks museums, wartime remembrance centres and hundreds of small local collections kept alive by volunteers.

The guide covers all twelve provinces, so it is also the ideal starting point for museum days beyond Amsterdam. Think of the Mauritshuis in The Hague, home of the Girl with a Pearl Earring, the Kröller-Müller Museum with its Van Gogh collection and sculpture garden in the Veluwe woods, the open-air Zuiderzeemuseum in Enkhuizen or the royal Paleis Het Loo near Apeldoorn.

Every card shows the town, a short description, the usual opening days where known and whether the museum accepts the Museumkaart (Museumcard). We review the full database twice a year, adding newly opened museums and removing those that have closed. Opening times do change, especially at smaller and seasonal museums, so always check the museum’s own website before you set off.

Prefer to visit with an expert? Museums where we offer a guided visit carry a Private tour available link on their card. Popular choices are the private Rijksmuseum tour, Guide for a Day in Amsterdam, the Delft and The Hague tour and the Utrecht and Kröller-Müller tour, or we can build a custom private tour around the museums you most want to see.

Museums in the Netherlands: frequently asked questions

How many museums are there in the Netherlands?

This guide currently lists almost 1,200 museums spread across the twelve Dutch provinces, from major national institutions to small volunteer-run collections. The Netherlands has more museums per square kilometre than any other country. The exact number changes as museums open, merge or close, which is why we review the whole guide twice a year.

What are the most famous museums in the Netherlands?

The best-known museums are the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum and the Anne Frank House, all in Amsterdam. Beyond the capital, favourites include the Mauritshuis in The Hague with the Girl with a Pearl Earring, the Kröller-Müller Museum in the Veluwe, the Zuiderzeemuseum in Enkhuizen and Paleis Het Loo near Apeldoorn.

Do I need to book museum tickets in advance?

For the big three in Amsterdam, yes. The Anne Frank House sells tickets online only and they are released six weeks ahead; our ticket date calculator tells you exactly when to buy. The Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum use timed entry tickets that sell out in high season. Most other museums in this guide can be visited without booking.

What is the Museumkaart (Museumcard)?

The Museumkaart is an annual pass that gives unlimited entry to hundreds of participating museums across the country. Use the Museumcard filter on this page to see which museums accept it; if you plan more than a handful of museum visits, the card usually pays for itself. Check the official Museumkaart website for current prices and conditions.

Are Dutch museums open on Mondays?

The large national museums are generally open seven days a week, but many smaller and mid-sized museums close on Mondays. Smaller volunteer-run and seasonal museums may only open a few afternoons a week. The cards in this guide show the usual opening days where known, and we always recommend checking the museum’s own website before you travel.

Can I visit Dutch museums with a private guide?

Yes. We arrange private, licensed guides for many of the museums in this guide, in and beyond Amsterdam. Museums where we offer a guided visit show a Private tour available link on their card, or we can design a custom private tour around any museum you would like to visit.

Which Dutch cities outside Amsterdam are best for museums?

The Hague offers the Mauritshuis and Escher in Het Paleis, Rotterdam is known for its striking modern museums and harbour history, Utrecht has the Centraal Museum and the national railway museum, and Leiden squeezes a dozen museums into its old centre. Use the province and location filters above to build your own museum day in any city.
