Yes, although it’s often described as a museum-like area, some homes are privately owned and inhabited. It’s a mix of historical preservation and real life, so please respect the locals when taking photographs and walking through the village.

Is Zaanse Schans a real village or just a tourist attraction?

It’s a mix of both. While many of the houses are authentic and some are still lived in, the windmills and workshops have been relocated from across the Netherlands to preserve them. It feels like an open-air museum, but it does have some residents and local craftspeople working there.

How far is Zaanse Schans from Amsterdam?

  • By train: Take a train from Amsterdam Centraal to Zaandijk Zaanse Schans (about 17 minutes), then walk 10-15 minutes to the site.

  • By car or tour: It’s about a 20 to 25-minute drive from the city centre of Amsterdam, we do offer a private tour with hotel, airport or cruise port pick-up to Zaanse Schans. 

  • By bus: Bus 391 from Amsterdam Centraal goes directly to Zaanse Schans in about 40 minutes

Is there an entrance fee to visit Zaanse Schans?

Walking around the Zaanse Schans site is free in 2026, as it is a public area. Some museums and working windmills charge an entrance fee if you want to go inside them. From 2027 onwards, an entrance fee for the village itself is expected to be introduced, although details may still change.

How much time should I plan for a visit to Zaanse Schans?

A typical visit lasts two to four hours depending on how many mills, museums and workshops you want to explore.
