Private Enkhuizen & Zuiderzee Museum Tour

This tour takes you from E to Z in just 8 hours. Discover the historic harbour town of Enkhuizen and explore life around the former Zuiderzee on a private guided tour. Experience maritime history, traditional crafts, and a beautifully preserved Dutch town.

Is the Zuiderzee Museum worth a day trip from Amsterdam?

Yes, particularly with children and particularly on a good weather day. Enkhuizen is about an hour from Amsterdam, and the open air part of the museum is a whole village of relocated houses, workshops and boats where the Zuiderzee fishing life is still demonstrated rather than described.

Combine it with the old harbour and the town itself and it makes a comfortable full day with your own guide and driver, without the crowds of the better known villages.

Private Enkhuizen & Zuiderzee Museum Tour

Enkhuizen, Historic Herring City

Enkhuizen was once one of the most important ports of the Zuiderzee and became known as the Herring City due to its central role in the herring trade. Today, Enkhuizen has one of the best-preserved medieval town centres in the Netherlands.

During your visit, you will explore its historic streets, harbours, and canals, gaining insight into the city’s maritime past and trading wealth. Enkhuizen is also an ideal place to enjoy a relaxed lunch before continuing to the museum.

Zuiderzee Museum, Life Before the Afsluitdijk

Zuiderzee Museum brings to life the stories of the people who lived around the Zuiderzee before the construction of the Afsluitdijk in 1932 transformed it into the IJsselmeer.
This cultural maritime museum uses all the senses to explore traditional daily life by the sea. Central themes include water management, craftsmanship, and close-knit coastal communities that depended on fishing and trade for generations.

Indoor and Outdoor Museum Experience

The indoor museum features a wide range of exhibits, including a ship hall with thirteen original vessels that once sailed the Zuiderzee. You will also see traditional costumes, paintings, tools, and household items from the region.
The outdoor museum is divided into five zones, centred around a recreated village. Historic buildings from former Zuiderzee towns and villages have been carefully relocated and restored, offering an immersive look into everyday life in the past.

Time to Explore Enkhuizen

If time allows, the second part of the tour is spent exploring more of Enkhuizen itself. This offers additional time to enjoy the atmosphere of the town, stroll along the harbour, or discover more of its historic character at a relaxed pace.

The Windmills of Zaanse Schans & Countryside Villages Group Tour: Kaleigh was adorable and enjoyed sharing her knowledge and passion! Although a quick trip, it was a fun exposure to Amsterdam's charm. It is a touristy tour, but it is enjoyable. The lunch was very tasty. Watching the wood cutting process at the Woodshop windmill was so interesting. Steven Leek at Cheese and Clogs was animated and fun!

Tulips and windmills at the peak of tulip season. Astonishing! Laszlo was wonderful. His experience and explanations, and his endless patience with my difficulty walking, absolutely made both the Keukenhof Gardens and Zaanse Schans windmills complete delights. He was well prepared, with umbrellas at the ready, and advice at just the right moments. The tulip fields, and the Keukenhof, were just stunning! And the village at Zaanse Schans was the perfect end to a wonderful day.

Anne Frank's Last Walk and VR visit of house. We were not able to book a tour of Anne Frank's actual house as it was sold out. We decided to book Anne Frank's Last Walk and VR visit of the house and we were not disappointed. Our guide, Carolina, was fabulous and we thorough ly enjoyed the tour. We happened to be touring on Anne Frank's 95th birthday which we did not realize but Carolina was prepared with flowers for us to place at the statue honoring Anne. It was a heartfelt moment for sure. Thank you to Carolina for providing a wonderful tour.

Lovely experience with Carolina Carolina was fabulous, she is very passionate and provided us a lot of background in the Anne Frank’s Last Walk. Carolina also bought flowers for us to pay tribute to Anne Frank as today is Anne Frank’s birthday.

We had a wonderful memorable day today with our tour guide Laszlo, at the 2nd last day at Keukenhof gardens and the Tulip Experience. It was a beautiful sunny day, many tulips were done, but we still saw many gorgeous displays of tulips, daffodils and hyacinths, indoors and out. Laszlo is very cheerful, hospitable, knowledgeable, and flexible. He took 40+ pictures of us with several displays, and shared them with us afterwards. He was especially knowledgeable about the business of tulip growing, explaining many facets at the Tulip Experience, and when driving to and from the fields. We were not able to come to Amsterdam before this date, but it was well worth it to have this memorable and special day with Laszlo. Thank you so much Laszlo, and best wishes to you in your life and career(s)! - Gary and Carol from Canada

Spectacular private tour with Chris of Amsterdam Experiences Had an amazing full day tour with Chris from Amsterdam Experiences. We were four sisters who took a private tour to Keukenhof and Zaanse Schanse. Chris was knowledgeable, friendly, passionate, thoughtful and a gentleman. He took us to a charming restaurant for lunch in an old train station, taught us a lot about the Dutch people, their culture and history. He pointed out important sights in the city that we wouldn't have visited otherwise and shared a list of fun things to do in Amsterdam. What a wonderful way to start our trip!

Our private tour of Zaanse Schans and Keukenhof with Parkinson's Disease This was our first visit to Amsterdam and my first trip abroad since my PD diagnosis, so I wanted to get some local help to ensure both I and my partner got the most out of our short tripI chose Bespoke Amsterdam Experiences as they offered all the activities we were interested in - food, tulips, windmills and boatsIt was very easy to make contact with them to ask questions - especially about my mobility issues and how this could be accommodated in the activities we were interested in. After the first contact, we had a dedicated person who handled all follow-up questions and bookings before and throughout our trip, which was very comforting and at no time was there any confusion or problem with language nuancesWe decided to do both the Private Tulips (Keukenhof) and Windmills (Zaanse Schans) tour together, as this was the main reason we chose to visit Amsterdam at this time and I did not want any problems with my mobility distracting my partner's enjoymentNote: If you have a UK blue badge, it is worth taking it with you along with the Dutch supplement notice you can print out, as it can help with parking at KeukenhofWe were met at our hotel by our guide for the day - Jeroen, promptly at the agreed time and taken by car first to Keukenhof. The day was wet and overcast and our guide Jeroen did his best to make sure we made the most of any breaks in the rain by driving us around some of the tulip fields until the rain eased up a little. After we arrived at the park, Jeroen explained the layout of the park, the best bits you must see and those that you can avoid, along with where to purchase tulip bulbs if we wanted to. After this, we were very kindly left to experience the colour, smell and sights of this wonderful park after agreeing on a time to meet back at the entranceThere was a lot to see this time of the year despite the rain and I had deliberately chosen not to use a wheelchair whilst I could still walk, albeit very slowly. This meant we initially did not have enough time to see everything, but Jeroen was very accommodating after a quick phone call, in adjusting our schedule to allow us more time at Keukenhof to see it all and most importantly time to purchase some tulip bulbs which are being delivered to our home later in the year. However, I am sure we still did not see everything as there were so many weaving paths and it was hard following our progress using the map in the rainWe then continued our journey onto Zaanse Schans, with our guide providing a very interesting history of the Netherlands as we travelledUpon arriving at the windmills, lunch was pre-booked at the local restaurant which served local food/drink as well as more international options - we can recommend the mustard soup and local beerZaanse Schans is made up of some working windmills, and several authentic houses that have been preserved/restored and moved to this park - some of which are privately owned, along with a clog museum, workshop and shop as well as a cheese museum. The windmills that are working do different tasks like saw wood, grindstone or crush cocoa into chocolate - we can recommend the make-your-own hot chocolate windmill along with the wood sawing windmill which has an accessibility lift allowing you to visit the different levels whilst it is in action (assuming it is windy enough)Again I chose not to use a wheelchair as it is all flat land, which worked OK as the park is smaller than Keukenhof, but be aware that steps in the Netherlands can be more like ladders to us in the UKWe were then driven back to our hotel after a thoroughly fun but exhausting day, along with some very helpful ideas from Jeroen of other gems to visit during our stay. We certainly got the best out of our time during this trip, due to the help and experience of our guide Jeroen

She had been fully briefed about my condition and was always aware of my needs, whilst making sure my partner did not miss out on anythingWe got to try new food and drink along with the local knowledge on where best to find this. For anyone also interested in knowing more about the places they visit, we also got a very detailed and knowledgeable history of the location and food/drink we experiencedBespoke Amsterdam Experiences not only listened to my upfront concerns and needs, but they also went out of their way to adapt the experience around these and at no time did I feel awkward or uncomfortableAfter the trip, we took away an amazing list of restaurants, bars and food to try during our stay

Wow, what an amazing time we had on this private flower tour in Amsterdam! Our guide, Stephan, was not only super friendly but also a total flower expert. Even though we were a week too early for the full blooms, he was able to show us all the coolest spots after researching where we could see some blooms! We even saw some baby tulips! Our guide personalized the tour just for us, making sure we got to see everything we were interested in. He even surprised us and took us to the beach along the North Sea where we had a fantastic lunch! If you're in Amsterdam and love flowers even half as much as we do, you've gotta book this tour. Thanks to our awesome guide, Stephan, and the whole team for a partial bloomin' good time! We'll definitely be back for more.

Bespoke Amsterdam Experiences is a great choice! I had an opportunity recently to work with Stephan and Katherine. They were so professional, courteous and excited to showcase Amsterdam. In short notice, Stephan pulled together a small group tour that was not previously available but fit with what we had in mind. I was in town for a conference and wanted to see the flowers in bloom before they were open to others. He put together an amazing driving tour where we could see the flowers in bloom! We even got to go to the North Sea for lunch, what a bonus I wasn't expecting. I will definitly be contacting Amsterdam Experiences for all of my Amsterdam tours going forward.

I met Stephan recently at travel agent industry event and just so happened I was bringing my family to Amsterdam for a day with no set plans! It was like it was fate that we met :) Stephan was quick to give me a professional itinerary that met my family's needs. He was also open to changes as needed as we were coming in on an overnight flight and knew my kids would be jetlagged. We had a wonderful day at Keukenhof gardens, walking tour with wonderful food stops in Amsterdam and a canal cruise on the cutest private vessel with drinks. His attention to detail was great - even giving my kids a traditional chocolate easter egg in the morning (our tour was on Easter). Everything was spot on! I plan to use his services for my client's needs as well in the future!

A Great Way to Tour Amsterdam Our family booked a custom tour for 4 to the countryside around Amsterdam. Booking was easy and the cost was reasonable. The driver (Laszlo) arrived perfectly on time with a comfortable Mercedes van, and we spent the next 8 hours touring. Our guide was terrific!! He is extremely nice, accommodating, knowledgable, and with a great sense of humor. It was a real pleasure with him as our guide - he is a highly skilled driver, and navigated the roads, streets, and parking lots like a pro. He knew the best spots for family photos, and took great photos for us to remember the trip. At each place, he made sure that we understood the background and nuances of the sites, and was happy to answer all of our questions. In addition, he was very flexible and helpful in modifying the tour as we desired, and also kept us to a reasonable schedule so that we never felt rushed, got to see all the sites, and returned us to out hotel at the end of the tour. We can't wait to book another tour with him. Thank you!

Amsterdam highlights What a special day! We started with the magnificent Keukenhof Gardens and then made a last minute itinerary change; instead of traveling to Zaanse Schans, our excellent guide Chris took us through Albert Cuyp market and introduced us to a variety of delicious culinary treats. We ended our day with a tour of the beautiful and peaceful Begijnhof. Bespoke was so pleasant to work with in the advance planning. Kathrine communicated every step of the process.

Stephan’s tours have added so much fun, knowedge, and joy to our lives. He has a way of pointing out small details that lead to wonderful stories back in time that help you relate to the history of the era. Not just dry facts and dates! From fantastical fun light tours set to music, to Black Plague informational tours with details and comparisons that make you ponder, to windmills at night from his kayak, he never disappoints. In fact, my 89 year old mother, special Ed adult son, husband who himself is a tour guide at Arlington National cemetery, all of us feel spoiled. We try other virtual guides, none hold a candle to what we learn and experience with Stephan. His music selections on his pre tours, (on the way to the real tour)/ are often some of our favorite parts. The thought and planning that go into each tour are valued as much as the spontaneous nature that sometimes leads us down different paths. He plays to his audience, listens, and responds well. Hopefully Stephan knows how much he brings to the lives of others across the world, it really is an astounding gift, and means a lot in today’s world. Thank you Stephan.

Amsterdam Experiences helped me organize a proposal on a private tour. They were incredibly helpful every step of the way. They were prompt in responding while planning the event, which really helped make the whole thing less stressful. They also gave helpful suggestions and were very invested in helping me get the details of the proposal perfect. In the end, both the actual tour and proposal were memorable. My girlfriend (now fiance) loved the proposal. We had a great time visiting Keukenhof Castle with our tour guide and enjoyed a picnic on the beach. Can’t recommend Amsterdam experiences enough.

The countryside is beautiful, and we saw so many quintessential Dutch things. We loved spending the day with Elka and hearing all kinds of history and stories. It was a great introduction to our stay! Thank you!!

We recently completed a week-long stay in Amsterdam. The trip was planned on short notice, due to frequently changing Covid rules. As part of our visit, we arranged three private tours through Amsterdam Experiences. From our initial contact through the completion of the tours, Amsterdam Experiences service was exemplary. Kathrine was able to arrange full-day tours of the Delft and The Hague, Tulips and Windmills and a private canal boat tour, all on a few weeks' notice. This was particularly remarkable, given we were visiting at one of the busiest times of the year. Our tour guides Jeroen and René were excellent. Knowledgable, organized, fun to be with, and the tours were well-paced. As well-travelled Americans living in Europe, it was a great experience!!!
