Arnhem has 10 museums, and two of them are among the most visited in the country.

The Nederlands Openluchtmuseum is the national open-air museum: 44 hectares of buildings moved here from across the Netherlands and rebuilt, with a working historic tram line running through it. It is a full day, not an afternoon.

The other thread is September 1944. Arnhem was the bridge too far, and the fighting is remembered at the bridge itself and, just outside the city in Oosterbeek, at the British headquarters where the battle was directed.

Three of the 10 accept the Museumcard. Two open every day.

The main collections

  • Nederlands Openluchtmuseum. The national open-air museum, with a historic tram line inside it. Allow a full day.
  • Museum Arnhem. The city’s art museum, reopened on its bluff above the Rhine.
  • Airborne at the Bridge. The battle for the bridge, told at the bridge, in three men’s stories.
  • Museum Bronbeek. The Dutch colonial army, in a royal veterans’ home, and unflinching about what that history contains.

The smaller ones

  • Nederlands Watermuseum. Water, in a country defined by managing it.
  • Nederlands Wijnmuseum. Dutch wine, which exists.
  • Historische Kelders Arnhem. Medieval cellars under the city centre.
  • Trolleybusmuseum. Arnhem has the only trolleybus network in the Netherlands, and this is its history.

Before you go

The Openluchtmuseum is largely outdoors and mostly seasonal in its full programme, so weather and time of year matter more here than at an indoor museum. The Airborne Museum Hartenstein, which many visitors pair with Airborne at the Bridge, is in Oosterbeek and appears on the Gelderland page rather than this one.
