That is why we explore the centre on foot or by bike, which is faster and reaches the spots cars cannot – and you can add a private canal cruise to see the city from the water. For hotel pickups, airport transfers and out-of-town day trips such as the countryside and Zaanse Schans, we provide a private chauffeur and vehicle.
Amsterdam weather is famously changeable, it is not unusual to experience four seasons in a single day. A waterproof jacket is an essential item year-round. We recommend wearing layers so you can adapt easily, and comfortable shoes that can handle both rain showers and cobblestones. Amsterdam is one of Europe’s most walkable cities, with most attractions within easy reach on foot. The public transport network (operated by GVB) is excellent, with metro, tram, and bus services running from Amsterdam Centraal. OV-chipkaart (the Dutch transit card) or contactless payment works on all services. Amsterdam is also one of the world’s great cycling cities, bike rental is widely available. Note that the city centre is largely car-free, so taxis are impractical in many areas. Free ferries cross the IJ river from behind Centraal Station to Amsterdam Noord.

The Dutch tend to eat dinner early by European standards, most restaurants begin filling up from 18:00, with peak dining around 18:30–19:30. Many kitchens close by 21:00 or 21:30. If you prefer a later dinner, it is worth booking in advance and confirming kitchen hours. Lunch is typically served from 12:00 to 14:30.
Amsterdam is largely cashless. Most shops, restaurants, and attractions accept contactless card payment. However, some smaller cafés, markets, and street vendors are cash-only. It is worth having a small amount of euros available as a backup. ATMs (pinautomaat) are widely available throughout the city.

It depends on the tour. For our private and tailored tours, we typically come to you. Your guide will meet you at your hotel, apartment, or another address of your choice. This makes the start of your day as easy as possible, with no need to find a meeting point in an unfamiliar city.
Some tours and experiences do have a central meeting point, which will be confirmed at the time of booking. Either way, your guide will always be in touch in advance with the exact details of where and when to meet.
For museum tours we usually meet at the museum itself. For full day tours it is normal for your guide to collect you from your hotel, from Schiphol Airport or from your ship, including the river cruise moorings and the ocean cruise terminals in Amsterdam, IJmuiden, Rotterdam and Zaandam.
Comfortable walking shoes are recommended, Amsterdam’s historic streets are cobbled in many areas. Bring a light waterproof jacket, especially in spring and autumn. Your guide will advise on anything specific for your chosen tour.
Gratuity is not included in the tour price. If you enjoyed your experience, a tip for your guide is always appreciated but entirely at your discretion.

The Anne Frank House releases tickets on a rolling basis and they sell out quickly. We can arrange tickets when your tour is booked at least 13 days in advance, and our Anne Frank House ticket date calculator shows when tickets for your dates are released and by when you need to book. No minimum. We welcome solo travellers and groups of any size. All private tours are available from a single guest upward. We keep groups to a maximum of fifteen guests per guide, and ten inside museums, so larger parties are simply split across more guides.

For our museum tours your entry tickets are included and booked for you, so there is nothing to buy separately and no queue. This covers the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, the Stedelijk and others. Many Amsterdam museums sell timed-entry tickets that go days or weeks ahead, and the Anne Frank House in particular sells out fast. Because we book ahead, we can often secure entry when the public website already shows limited or no availability, and for the Anne Frank House, where tickets are released only six weeks in advance, we book as soon as they are released. If a venue is genuinely full, we will tell you honestly and suggest the best alternative, such as our Anne Frank tour with the Secret Annex in virtual reality. Yes. We run private shore excursions built around your ship’s hours, whether you dock in Amsterdam, IJmuiden, Rotterdam or Zaandam. Your guide collects you at the terminal or mooring and has you back in good time before all-aboard. Full refunds are available for cancellations made at least 7 days before the tour date, minus any non-refundable pre-purchased items such as museum tickets. We accept payment by bank transfer and major credit and debit cards. Full payment is required at the time of booking unless otherwise agreed. Contact us if you have specific payment requirements.
When you book directly with us you are booking with the operator who actually runs the tour, not a reseller. That means a direct line to your guide, flexible changes, and someone who knows your booking if your plans shift. Prices on other websites can differ, as each marketplace sets its own fees. If you have seen one of our tours on another site, you are always welcome to come to us directly, and travel advisors are very welcome to book on your behalf.
The sooner the better, especially in spring and summer and around public holidays, when guides and museum tickets both get booked up. As a guide, we suggest booking private tours two to four weeks ahead, and earlier if your tour includes the Anne Frank House or Keukenhof, which sell out well in advance. We also welcome last-minute requests and will always do our best when a guide is available, so it is worth asking even at short notice.
