Breda has 12 museums, and they divide neatly between the city’s two stories: the House of Orange-Nassau, and the war.

Breda was the Nassau family’s Dutch seat long before they were kings, and the castle and the Grote Kerk still carry the evidence. Then in 1944 the city was liberated by the First Polish Armoured Division, and it has not forgotten: two of the twelve museums are devoted to it, and Polish veterans asked to be buried here.

Three of the 12 accept the Museumcard. None open every day of the week.

The main collections

  • Stedelijk Museum Breda. The city’s principal museum, covering its art, its graphic design tradition and its history.
  • Breda’s Museum. The story of the city, the Nassaus and the fortifications that shaped it.
  • Generaal Maczek Memorial. The Polish forces who liberated Breda, told properly rather than in passing.

The smaller ones

  • Begijnhof Museum. The last inhabited beguinage in the Netherlands, with a herb garden that is still worked.
  • Museum Oorlog en Vrede. War and peace, from a local perspective.
  • Bier Reclame Museum. Brewery advertising, which in a Brabant city is closer to social history than it sounds.
  • NAC Museum. The football club, for anyone who understands what that means in this part of the country.
  • Princenhaags Museum and Heemkundemuseum Paulus van Daesdonck. Neighbourhood collections, run by people who live there.
