Eindhoven has 12 museums, and almost all of them are about making things.

This was a village until Philips arrived, and the city that grew around the light bulb factory still thinks like a workshop. You can visit the 1891 lamp factory the company started in, the museum of what it became, the truck maker down the road, and a contemporary art museum with one of the most serious collections in Europe.

Five of the 12 accept the Museumcard. One opens every day.

The main collections

  • Van Abbemuseum. Modern and contemporary art at international level, and far better than most visitors to Eindhoven expect.
  • Philips Museum. The company that built the city, in the building where it started.
  • DAF Museum. Dutch cars and trucks, including the Variomatic that nobody else built.
  • PreHistorisch Dorp. A living archaeology site on the edge of the city, worked rather than displayed.
  • Museum Kempenland. The region before the industry arrived.

The smaller ones

  • Philips Gloeilampenfabriekje anno 1891. The original lamp workshop, restored.
  • Evoluon Experience. The flying saucer on the ring road, now open again as an exhibition space.
  • Next Nature Museum. Technology and nature, which is the most Eindhoven subject imaginable.
  • Ton Smits Huis. The cartoonist’s house and work.
  • Inkijkmuseum. A museum you look into through a window rather than enter.
  • PSV Museum. The club, which in Eindhoven is also a Philips story.

Before you go

Only one of the twelve opens every day. Several of the smaller ones run limited hours, and the PreHistorisch Dorp is largely seasonal, so check before travelling.
