Flevoland has 14 museums, the fewest of any province, and the youngest ground in the world to put them on.

None of this province existed before the 1940s. It was the bottom of the Zuiderzee, pumped dry and turned into farmland and new towns within a single lifetime. That makes its museums unusual: they are about the making of the land itself, and about what was found when the water went.

Five of the 14 accept the Museumcard. One opens every day.

Worth planning a day around

  • Museum Batavialand, Lelystad. How Flevoland was created, the shipwrecks the drained seabed gave up, and the reconstructed VOC ship Batavia.
  • Luchtvaartmuseum Aviodrome, Lelystad. One of Europe’s best aviation museums, with a Boeing 747 you can walk through, at Lelystad airport.
  • Museum Schokland, Ens. A former island, stranded on dry land when the sea was pumped away, and the first Dutch UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Het Oude Raadhuis, Urk. Urk was an island too, and it still behaves like one. The fishing history is told from inside.
  • Museum Nagele. A village designed entirely by modernist architects as an experiment, explained where it stands.
  • Nationaal Ruimtevaart Museum, Lelystad. Dutch space exploration.

Before you go

Flevoland is built for cars, with long straight roads and few stations. Lelystad holds four of the fourteen, including the two biggest, so a day based there covers most of the province. Only one opens every day.
