The province of Groningen has 92 museums across 54 towns, and only nine of them are in the city.

The other 83 are scattered through villages, and the speciality is the borg: a fortified manor house, moated, with its interiors and estate intact. Menkemaborg at Uithuizen and Fraeylemaborg at Slochteren are the two most complete, and there is nothing quite like them elsewhere in the country.

Sixteen of the 92 accept the Museumcard, the lowest proportion of any province, so this is one region where the card does less work. None open every day.

Where the museums are

  • Groningen city, 9. The Groninger Museum, Storyworld and the university collections.
  • Noordbroek and Stadskanaal, 4 each. Peat colony history along the canals.
  • Slochteren, Appingedam and Grootegast, 3 each. Borgen and village heritage.

Worth planning a day around

  • Groninger Museum. The building on the island outside the station, and the province’s principal collection.
  • Menkemaborg, Uithuizen. The best preserved borg, with period interiors and formal gardens.
  • Fraeylemaborg, Slochteren. A borg with an estate park attached.
  • Klooster Ter Apel. A medieval monastery, remarkably complete, in the far south-east.
  • Openluchtmuseum Het Hoogeland, Warffum. Village life in the northern clay country.
  • Museum Wierdenland, Ezinge. The terp mounds people built to live above the sea before there were dykes.

Before you go

This is a province for a car and a clear day. The borgen and village museums sit far apart, several open seasonally, and none of the 92 open all week. If you are carrying a Museumcard, note that only sixteen accept it here.

Visiting with a private guide

We build private days across this province around the museums you actually want to see, with driving, tickets and timing arranged so the day works rather than sprawls.

Plan your tour, or see all our private tours.

Common questions

How many museums are there in the province of Groningen?
Ninety-two across 54 towns, of which only nine are in the city itself. Sixteen accept the Museumcard.
What is a borg?
A fortified manor house particular to the Groningen countryside, usually moated and set in its own estate. Menkemaborg and Fraeylemaborg are the two most completely preserved and both are museums.
Is the Museumcard useful in Groningen?
Less than elsewhere. Sixteen of the 92 accept it, the lowest proportion of any Dutch province.
What is a terp or wierde?
An artificial mound built to keep a settlement above the water before dykes existed. Museum Wierdenland at Ezinge explains them on the site of one.

This page is part of our complete guide to museums in the Netherlands, covering all 1,167 of them.
