Limburg has 71 museums across 38 towns, and a history that runs deeper than the rest of the country’s.
The Romans built baths at Heerlen, and the Thermenmuseum is constructed directly over the excavation. Maastricht was a fortress for two thousand years. The south was coal country until the 1970s, and the museums that deal with that closure are among the most honest industrial history in the Netherlands.
Twenty-seven of the 71 accept the Museumcard. Three open every day.
Limburg is long. Maastricht to Venlo is an hour and a half by car, so pick a base rather than trying to cross the province daily. Valkenburg’s caves and several castle sites are seasonal. Only three of the 71 open every day.
