Maastricht has nine museums, and some of the best of it is underground.

This is a fortress city on a Roman foundation, and the defences went down as well as up. The casemates are kilometres of tunnels cut into the marl beneath the ramparts, and they are visited on guided routes rather than wandered. Above ground, the Bonnefanten’s rocket-shaped tower on the Maas is the building everyone photographs.

Three of the nine accept the Museumcard. None open every day.

The main collections

  • Bonnefanten. Limburg’s principal art museum, old masters downstairs and contemporary above, in an Aldo Rossi building.
  • Museum aan het Vrijthof. Applied art and the city’s history in the Spanish Government House on the Vrijthof.
  • Natuurhistorisch Museum Maastricht. Fossils from the local marl, including the mosasaur the Maastrichtian age is named after.

The smaller ones

  • Kazematten Maastricht. The defensive tunnels under the ramparts, on guided routes.
  • Vestingmuseum Maastricht. The fortifications explained above ground.
  • Schatkamer Sint Servaas. The treasury of the basilica, with reliquaries going back a thousand years.
  • Centre Céramique. Library, exhibitions and the city’s collections in the Céramique quarter.
  • Museum de Historische Drukkerij. A working historic printing house.
  • Museum Kapel van Verbeelding. Contemporary art in a chapel.

Before you go

The casemates and the marl caves are visited by guided tour only, at set times, and they are cold underground whatever the weather above. None of the nine museums open seven days a week.
