Zeeland has 72 museums across 43 towns, and most of them are about water.
This is a province of islands that were joined together by engineering, and the defining event is still the flood of 1953, when the sea broke through in the night and more than 1,800 people died. The Watersnoodmuseum at Ouwerkerk is built inside four concrete caissons that were sunk to close the final breach. It is one of the most affecting museums in the Netherlands.
Twenty-five of the 72 accept the Museumcard. Seven open every day, the highest daily count outside Noord-Holland, because Zeeland is a holiday province and its museums keep summer hours.
Zeeland is seasonal in a way most of the country is not. Seven museums open daily in summer and far fewer out of season, and several village collections close entirely in winter. A car is close to essential once you leave Middelburg and Vlissingen.
