A Private Amsterdam City Highlights Walking Tour

Perfect for first-time visitors to Amsterdam. If you’re short on time but want a deep introduction to Amsterdam’s history and culture, this private walking tour is ideal. With a local guide, explore the city’s most iconic, must-see places on this private half-day walking tour, from the canal district to Dam Square, and uncover hidden gems like the tranquil Begijnhof courtyard and quirky stories that most visitors miss. Start in the morning or afternoon to suit your day.

Because the tour is private and priced per group rather than per person, from €400 covers your whole party, so for a couple or family it is often better value than a per-person walking tour, with the guide and the route entirely yours.

Where possible we start at your hotel, so the exact route and the part of the city you see depend on where you begin. Every walk is shaped around your interests, but to give you an idea, your guide might include highlights such as:

  • The canal belt and its UNESCO-listed merchant houses
  • Dam Square and the Royal Palace
  • The Jordaan, Amsterdam’s charming former working-class quarter
  • The Amstel river and the Magere Brug (Skinny Bridge)
  • A hidden canal square for a local drinks stop
  • The historic Jewish Quarter and lively Nieuwmarkt

These are suggestions rather than a fixed itinerary – just let your guide know what interests you most and they will tailor the walk around it.

Amsterdam Sightseeing Tour Featuring the Canal District, Dam Square, Jordaan, and More

Where possible, your guide can meet you at your hotel in central Amsterdam before walking into the historic centre. Stroll through the scenic streets of the canal district, visit Dam Square and wander through the charming, former working-class neighbourhood of Jordaan.

From Jordaan, continue through quieter streets and over the canals to the Amstel River and cross the iconic Magere Brug (Bridge of Love), enjoying views of Amsterdam’s canal boat life. Pause for a refreshing drink in a hidden canal square, a favourite local spot.

After your break, walk through the historic Jewish Quarter and conclude your highlights tour near the vibrant Nieuwmarkt, one of Amsterdam’s oldest squares with lively cafés and market history.

Weather, route and foodstops

The route of our City Highlights Private Tour can be adapted based on weather, timing and your interests. Many guests also combine this walking tour with Amsterdam food experiences such as the city’s best apple pie or a Gouda cheese tasting for a richer cultural experience.

Our guides start their day with a sun dance, but in case of rain, please bring an umbrella and poncho so we can still enjoy the tour. Also, a good meal before the tour will make it a lot more enjoyable.

If you want to extend your Amsterdam discovery, combine this highlights tour with a museum visit or a classic canal cruise. For the ultimate experience, see our Ultimate Amsterdam in a Day tour for more details.

Why choose this private Amsterdam City Highlights tour?

This private walking tour goes beyond surface sightseeing to connect you with Amsterdam’s history, architecture and local stories. With a local guide, you explore iconic spots and hidden gems, making it ideal whether you’re a first-time visitor or returning to deepen your experience.

Ideal Way to End An Amazing Journey Amsterdam is an amazing city. It's fascinating and important place in European history, evidenced with the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, Anne Frank Haus, canal rides etc, make Amsterdam equal to, or better, than Paris, Rome, and London. In our five glorious days we thought we had done it all, so on our last day in Amsterdam and our trip, my wife booked the perfect ending with the Craft Beer Tour 🍺. First and foremost, our guide Michael, was far and above the best guide we had not just in Amsterdam, but our entire 18 day European trip. Not only was he the most, friendly and interesting, but his vast and expansive knowledge in not just the Amsterdam craft beer scene but in Dutch art, architecture, cultural history knew no bounds. Add to that, the best beers my wife and I have ever enjoyed, made this one of the highlights of our vacation. This established, we enthusiastically give our highest recommendation to Michael and we personally thank him for concluding our trip with an unexpected highlight of our amazing journey.

Amsterdams City Highlights & Hidden Gems Small Group Walking Tour Small group of 12 for a walking tour. Learned lots of Amsterdam history and saw lots of great architecture. Don’t actually go into any sites during the tour. One stop for coffee and break during the three hours. Guide will adjust walk based on participants.

Right from the start we were very impressed with the response to our request. We were looking for a private 5 hour bike and Rijks museum tour with transportation from our cruise ship which was docked in Ijmuiden. Everything went smooth and easy. The bike tour was lot of fun. We stopped for waffles and coffee and saw all the important highlights. Then we had a quick but amazing tour of the Rijks Museum. Our guide Michael was fantastic, fun and extremely knowledgable on the art and the history of Amsterdam. The only thing is that we wish we had more time. Thanks for a wonderful tour Michael and Kathrine for organizing everything!

A deeply moving and enlightening experience This walking tour about Anne Frank was one of the highlights of our time in Amsterdam. It was incredibly informative and thoughtfully designed, bringing history to life in a way that was both educational and emotional. At times, it was deeply moving to stand in the very places where these events unfolded. Our guide, Kees, was absolutely wonderful—knowledgeable, passionate, and engaging throughout the entire experience. He brought a personal and human perspective to the story that made it all the more powerful. I highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Amsterdam who wants a deeper understanding of Anne Frank’s life and the broader historical context of the city during World War II.

“Sip, Savor, and Discover – the beer tour where great taste meets unforgettable moments Absolutely fantastic tour! Kees was truly the star of the show—an incredibly knowledgeable, patient, and fun guide who made this one of the highlights of my solo trip to the Netherlands. Whether you’re new to beer or a seasoned enthusiast, this tour offers fascinating insights into the history, ingredients, and traditions of beer making, as well as some friendly regional rivalries. Our group of five, including four lively gentlemen and myself (the only female and a total novice), came together quickly—and the beer certainly helped! I felt completely safe and welcome the entire time, and we shared so many laughs along the way.We visited four unique bars and sampled a great variety of beers. Kees made thoughtful recommendations tailored to our tastes, making sure everyone had a memorable experience. I can’t recommend this tour—and Kees—highly enough! A must-do for anyone visiting the Netherlands.

Such an incredible tour…BOOK IT! This tour was by far one of the main highlights of our trip! Rachael was the best host and guide - seriously, she’s amazing! We went to the coolest bars and she picked ridiculously good beers. We had lots of great snacks, so many laughs, and learned a bunch, too! We were in a small (and awesome) group…which added to the tour! Highly, highly recommend this tour if you’re ever in Amsterdam!

Splendid and Unforgettable Tour!! Our family of 5 from the US toured the Rijksmuseum with Edgar before our self-guided visit to the Vermeer exhibit (as part of an Amsterdam Experiences package). Edgar was exceptional in navigating us through the museum in 90 minutes, hitting both the highlights in detail (his knowledge of Rembrandt was remarkable) as well as some hidden gems (both inside and outside the building). He had marvelous anecdotes and a keen sense of humor. It was a very memorable visit. Kathrine, who coordinated our tour through Amsterdam Experiences, was outstanding in trans-Atlantic communication and promptness as well as greeting us in-person outside the very crowded museum exterior to assure a timely meeting with Edgar. You cannot go wrong with this very reliable company!

Amsterdam highlights What a special day! We started with the magnificent Keukenhof Gardens and then made a last minute itinerary change; instead of traveling to Zaanse Schans, our excellent guide Chris took us through Albert Cuyp market and introduced us to a variety of delicious culinary treats. We ended our day with a tour of the beautiful and peaceful Begijnhof. Bespoke was so pleasant to work with in the advance planning. Kathrine communicated every step of the process.

Vermeer and private Rijksmuseum tour with great guide: Edgar We got tickets to the Vermeer exhibit through this company, which included an excellent Rijksmuseum tour led by Edgar. We were met outside the museum right on time by Katherine, who got us straight into the Vermeer exhibition It was just the two of us and 1 other person. We met Edgar in the museum cafe after we spent 2 hours going through Vermeer, as guides are not allowed in that exhibition. He tailored our 90 minute Rijksmuseum tour to our interests while showing us highlights of the collection, including a discussion of the Vermeer exhibit, what is being learned about Rembrandt during the current restoration of "The NIghtwatch", how events in Rembrandt's life influenced his art, and similarities and differences among Dutch artists through paintings on view. Edgar is very knowledgable and a really nice person. He also has a strong background in the city's more modern architecture, specifically the Amsterdam school, and key locations for activities of the Dutch Resistance during World War II, so we spent extra time with him on these subjects. Edgar made a wonderful day with great art even better through his depth of knowledge, his love of these subjects and his joy in sharing and discussing them. Very satisfied with this tour company, and highly recommend Edgar as a guide.

Thoroughly recommend this tour. We were disappointed to miss out on tickets for the Anne Frank House, but actually think this tour worked out better. The Virtual Reality experience was terrific. Great to see the house full of furniture, as it would have been for Anne & her family. And to have it to yourself not full of crowds of people. The VR session was really immersive. You very quickly get completely absorbed in it, and there are lots of options to hear snippets of the diary, and click on areas of the house for more info. The walking element was very interesting too to get some background on life & events of the time. Plus it also highlights elements you might otherwise miss, like stumble stones. Definitely worth doing.

Excellent walking tour and canal boat ride Today, we did a private walking tour with Stephan from Amsterdam Experiences. He showed us all the highlights of this beautiful city including the red light district. He is extremely knowledgeable about the area having lived here all his life. He even took us to a small cafe where we had the most delicious homemade Dutch apple pie. He took time to explain the history of Amsterdam. The tour was done at our pace and definitely showed us everything we wanted to see. After the walking tour, he took us on a 2 hour canal boat ride where we enjoyed a snack tray and a glass of wine in a unique wooden boat. I would strongly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Amsterdam. You won’t be disappointed.

Highly recommend! Our tour with Rachael was awesome! She took us to some great hidden gems around the city. She shared our passion for craft beer, and was able to make some great suggestions everywhere we stopped. She knew their background and had stories about each bar we stopped at. She answered all of our questions about the city and the culture and left us with a list of wonderful suggestions for places to check out while we were still in Amsterdam. It was definitely one of the highlights of our trip thus far and I would highly suggest it!

So much to learn and see! We learned a lot and enjoyed the pace of the tour. Our guide Guido kept everything very interesting and informative. Walking through the different Jewish neighborhoods and learning about this important part of Dutch history was definitely one of the highlights of our trip.
