Rotterdam is known for its striking modern architecture, shaped largely by the destruction of the Second World War and the city’s ambitious post-war rebuilding. On this private tour, you will explore both Rotterdam’s contemporary skyline and the historic buildings that survived the 1940 bombing. The tour combines walking through key districts with time to experience the city from the water.
You will explore Rotterdam’s city centre and visit the Old Harbour, dating back to the 14th century, where historic ships sit alongside modern cafés and architecture. The tour also includes time in Museumpark, a cultural hub home to several major institutions.
Here you will see landmarks such as the Natuurhistorisch Museum, the Netherlands Architecture Institute, and Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, all located within walking distance of each other.
A highlight of the tour is a visit to the famous Cubic Houses, designed by architect Piet Blom. These innovative homes are one of the most recognisable symbols of post-war Rotterdam. You will have the opportunity to step inside one of the Cubic Houses and experience this unique approach to high-density urban living, with the houses tilted on hexagonal poles to maximise space and light.
After the walking tour, you will head to the Port of Rotterdam for a harbour boat cruise. This cruise can be taken either on the Spido or the Water-Bus (literally a bus that goes in the water!). From the water, enjoy views of the city skyline, vast shipyards, docks, and endless rows of shipping containers.
During the cruise, you will also see the historic Rotterdam steamship, the former cruise flagship of the Holland America Line. Commentary during the cruise explains how the port shaped the city’s growth and became the largest harbour in Europe.
If time allows, additional areas of the city may be explored before the tour concludes.

You will see Rotterdam’s striking modern architecture, including the Cube Houses and the Markthal, the Erasmus Bridge, and the bustling harbour. A harbour boat cruise is included, giving you fine views of Europe’s largest port.
Rotterdam was largely rebuilt after the Second World War, so it has a bold, contemporary skyline that feels quite different from Amsterdam’s historic canals. It makes a fascinating contrast on a day trip.
Absolutely. As a private tour, the day is shaped around your interests, whether that is architecture, maritime history, food at the Markthal, or a relaxed harbour cruise.
