A Private Tour of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam

Follow Vincent’s story with your own Private Guide on our Van Gogh Museum Private Tour. This tour is great way to get an introduction to one of the most beloved Dutch artists. As your own private guide takes you around the museum, you will follow Vincent’s story through the various stages of his life.

Discover the Genius of Van Gogh

Van Gogh is the ultimate misunderstood artistic genius. He was considered a madman and a failure while he was alive, but acquired widespread artistic and commercial success in the decades following his death. You’ll be using both your ears to hear the engaging stories about his life and artwork from your very own private guide.

More than just a tour of his masterpieces, in this tour you will learn more about Van Gogh as a person. How did he start his painting career? How was his relationship with his family and friends? Your guide takes you through the museum to provide the stories behind the paintings that go much deeper than the descriptions on the wall.

Get Up Close to the Sunflowers and The Potato Eaters

Discover the inspirations behind Van Gogh’s bold colours and brushwork, from the radiance of Sunflowers to his self-portraits, almond blossoms and landscapes. You follow Vincent’s story from his humble upbringing, his decision to take up the brush, his unrecognised genius, to eventually his most productive times and his tragic death.

Why is his art so important? How did he arrive to his famously bold colours and impulsive brushwork? How did Van Gogh become one of the most celebrated painters of post impressionism? You’ll discover this and much more on your private tour through the entire museum.

Ideal Way to End An Amazing Journey Amsterdam is an amazing city. It's fascinating and important place in European history, evidenced with the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, Anne Frank Haus, canal rides etc, make Amsterdam equal to, or better, than Paris, Rome, and London. In our five glorious days we thought we had done it all, so on our last day in Amsterdam and our trip, my wife booked the perfect ending with the Craft Beer Tour 🍺. First and foremost, our guide Michael, was far and above the best guide we had not just in Amsterdam, but our entire 18 day European trip. Not only was he the most, friendly and interesting, but his vast and expansive knowledge in not just the Amsterdam craft beer scene but in Dutch art, architecture, cultural history knew no bounds. Add to that, the best beers my wife and I have ever enjoyed, made this one of the highlights of our vacation. This established, we enthusiastically give our highest recommendation to Michael and we personally thank him for concluding our trip with an unexpected highlight of our amazing journey.

The tour of the Van Gogh Museum was even better than I expected. Michael, the guide, was extremely easy to listen to and talk to. Before we entered each room, he provided thoughtful context about Van Gogh’s life during that particular period, which gave us a much deeper understanding of the works we were about to see. He answered every question with care and insight, making the experience feel personal and enriching. I had visited the museum before on my own using just the audio guide, but this guided tour offered a completely different level of appreciation and connection to Van Gogh’s art. Highly recommend!

We were able to visit the Van Gogh Museum even though the exhibition was sold out. Michael, who led the tour, was an absolutely wonderful guide! Thank you for this memorable experience.

Wonderful Van Gogh museum private tour Kaleigh was a fabulous guide. Energetic - knowledgeable and pitched it perfectly with lots of fun facts. She picked us up at our hotel and took us on the short tram ride ( so we also learned to ride a tram which was great) before arriving at the museum. Two hours was perfect and we could ask her anything as it was just the two of us. Completely immersed us in Van Gogh’s world and she must have been there many times but she had the va va voom of someone who truly loves what they do and we felt lucky to have had her guide us. Great company- everything worked like clockwork with reminders and clear guidance on times and where to meet. So glad we treated ourselves to the private tour option too.

Hey you. Yes, you, you beautiful global traveler scouring the internet for tips and tricks ahead of your Amsterdam adventure. Well, congratulations. You found it. THE best tour and experiences company in all the Netherlands. My wife and I have just recently returned from a kid-free excursion to tulip country and let me say, Kathrine and the team at Amsterdam Experiences, helped orchestrate the most perfect getaway. From the private canal cruise aboard the stunning S.S. Lucy (Cheers to Capt Matthijs for hot mulled wine and delicious cheese!), to a bespoke guided tour of the Van Gogh museum by fellow CO native Kaleigh (So cheerful and knowledgeable!), to the unforgettable, personalized tour of the Red Light District from our new friend (and honorary Mayor of the area) Simon…we truly had the best trip as each person fully embraced us with local hospitality and the unmistakeable feeling of gezellig. We can’t wait to return. So, in summary, Kathrine rocks, her guides rock, Amsterdam double rocks, and you’ll be rocking too when you plan your visit with Amsterdam Experiences.

The way to see the Van Gogh Museum! Anna was our tour guide and she was superb! She told us the in depth story of Van Gogh and his legacy while demonstrating it through his paintings. She showed us many things that we would have likely missed had we visited without the tour, both regarding his art style and his story! She was also able to show us some works that were not in the Museum and how they fit with his collection and his story as a whole. She also encouraged us to engage with the story of Van Gogh and question what is generally believed about him. If you want to get the most out of your trip to the Van Gogh Museum, go with this tour!

A deep dive into Vincent Van Gogh with an Art historian Anna was an amazing guide through the museum, and Van Gogh’s life. Th museum was very crowded, but we were in capable hands. I have a new perspective on Van Gogh’s artwork and his life. The Van Gogh Family has done a great job of curating the museum and maintaining such an incredible body of his work.If you like Van Gogh’s work, don’t miss the museum. If you want to know more, book a tour with Anna!

Great Company, Talented Guides! Before we even arrived in Amsterdam, I was already impressed with Stephan and his company. Through emails and personal phone calls, Stephan wanted to make sure that he could accurately gauge our areas of interest so that he could put together the best itinerary. He gave us several choices and options so that we could choose what we liked. All of the paperwork was taken care of and Stephan even took the time to meet us for coffee to ensure we were happy and answer any questions. I have taken many tours throughout Europe and Violeta and Els were two of the very best.... they were both so knowledgeable and passionate that it was infectious. Violeta showed us the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh museum and well some insider secrets to several neighborhoods! Els made Delft and Den Haag come alive with equal fervor and interjected interesting facts also get with personal anecdotes. I have had many guides who just seem to go through the paces and seem to speak from a script. Having said that, they were both extremely flexible if we wanted to linger over lunch, for example, and continually checked in to see if we were happy with the pace the content...etc..Most importantly, they were extremely relaxed and very funny...we sincerely enjoyed hanging out with each of them and learned an incredible amount about the country.I would highly recommend contacting Stephan in the early stages of your trip planning as he and his guides will only enhance your experience.
