Always wanted to see the famous work of the Dutch Masters; Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Frans Hals? In this Private Rijksmuseum Tour, your guide provides a personal experience of the Netherlands most visited art museum, exploring 800 years of Dutch history through art and artefacts.
Your guide meets you at the ATM outside Cobra Cafe on Hobbemastraat and takes you straight in, no queuing at the ticket desk. Inside, the tour moves at your pace, with time to linger and focus on what interests you most.
You will move through the Gallery of Honour to Rembrandt’s Night Watch, with stops at Vermeer’s Milkmaid, Dutch Golden Age portraits, the Delftware collection, and Pierre Cuypers’ architecture. The tour usually runs about 2 hours, after which you are welcome to explore at your own pace.
With a deep knowledge of the displayed art, the guide explains the stories behind the artists and their work in fluent English. The Gallery of Honour welcomes back Vermeers The Milkmaid, Woman Reading a Letter, The Love Letter and Little Street. This is your chance to see some of the Master of Light’s finest work. Rijksmuseum has the biggest collection of the work of Johannes Vermeer. His works showcase the evolution of Dutch painting styles and subjects, offering a deeper look at daily life and culture in 17th century Netherlands.
Not only the paintings are discussed during this tour. Your guide also draws attention to the Rijksmuseum building itself, an impressive Renaissance Revival design by Pierre Cuypers. After years of careful renovation, the museum reopened in 2013 and is widely considered a work of art in its own right.
Learn how the building’s layout, galleries and sightlines are designed to frame and enhance the collection. In true Amsterdam style, cyclists pass underneath the central passage, and if you are lucky, you may even hear a free classical concert as you enter the museum.

Beyond that the route is yours. Tell your guide what draws you in and they will shape the two hours around it, whether that is the Dutch Golden Age, a single painter, or the quieter corners most visitors walk straight past. Two worth asking about are the Cuypers Library, the art history reading room at the heart of the building and one of the most striking spaces in it, and the seventeenth-century dolls’ houses, which were collectors’ pieces rather than toys and furnished at the cost of a real canal house.
The private tour usually runs about two hours, with your guide adapting the content and pace to you. Most visitors spend two to three hours in the museum in total, so after the tour you are welcome to stay and explore at your own pace until the museum closes at 5pm. Entrance tickets are included. The Rijksmuseum holds around 8,000 objects across 80 galleries, and most visitors spend a good part of their visit working out where to go rather than looking at anything. Unlike an audio guide, which plays the same script to everyone, your guide reads the room, answers your actual questions, skips what bores you and lingers where you are interested. Yes. The Night Watch has remained on public view throughout Operation Night Watch, the museum’s long-running research and restoration project. At times it has been visible behind a glass enclosure while conservators work, which many visitors find fascinating in its own right. Your guide will know the situation on the day and will tell you in advance if anything significant is off view.
Yes, and it is worth paying attention to. Pierre Cuypers designed the building to be read alongside the collection, so the sightlines, the light and the placement of the Gallery of Honour are all deliberate. Your guide will also point out the cycle passage running straight through the middle of a national museum, which says a great deal about Amsterdam, and if the timing is lucky you may catch one of the free classical performances at the entrance.
Yes, and please tell us when you book. The Rijksmuseum itself is wheelchair accessible, with lifts and accessible routes throughout the building, and we can adapt the pace and the route to suit. We do need to know in advance, though, so we can plan the right route and put you with a guide who is comfortable with it. Tell us the specifics and we will talk it through with you before the day.
Tickets are included: when you book the tour we arrange the timed-entry tickets for you, so there is nothing to book separately and no queue at the ticket desk. On timing, we do recommend booking in advance, particularly if you want a specific guide, because guide availability is usually the limiting factor rather than the museum. If you are already in Amsterdam, do still ask, because we can often make something work at short notice.
