Private Rijksmuseum Tour: Experience the National Museum of the Netherlands

Always wanted to see the famous work of the Dutch Masters; Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Frans Hals? In this Private Rijksmuseum Tour, your guide provides a personal experience of the Netherlands most visited art museum, exploring 800 years of Dutch history through art and artefacts.

Why Choose this Tour?

  • Skip the planning: your guide takes you straight to what matters, no queue and no map
  • See the works you actually came for, in the time you actually have
  • Ask anything, at any point, and get a real answer rather than a recorded script
  • A guide matched to you, whether that means scholarship, technique or keeping children hooked
  • Leave understanding why the Golden Age happened, not just which paintings are famous

What to Expect on Your Private Rijksmuseum Tour

Your guide meets you at the ATM outside Cobra Cafe on Hobbemastraat and takes you straight in, no queuing at the ticket desk. Inside, the tour moves at your pace, with time to linger and focus on what interests you most.

You will move through the Gallery of Honour to Rembrandt’s Night Watch, with stops at Vermeer’s Milkmaid, Dutch Golden Age portraits, the Delftware collection, and Pierre Cuypers’ architecture. The standard tour runs approximately 2 hours, after which you are welcome to explore at your own pace.

Discover Rembrandt’s Nightwatch on This Rijksmuseum Guided Tour

With a deep knowledge of the displayed art, the guide explains the stories behind the artists and their work in fluent English. Of course, what would a visit to the Rijksmuseum be without getting eye-to-eye with Rembrandt’s masterpiece, De Nachtwacht? Don’t worry, we will teach you how to pronounce it correctly!

Get up close to Vermeer’s Milkmaid and his Little Street

The Gallery of Honour welcomes back Vermeers The Milkmaid, Woman Reading a Letter, The Love Letter and Little Street. This is your chance to see some of the Master of Light’s finest work. Rijksmuseum has the biggest collection of the work of Johannes Vermeer. His works showcase the evolution of Dutch painting styles and subjects, offering a deeper look at daily life and culture in 17th century Netherlands.

The Rijksmuseum Building is an Architectural Work of Art

Not only the paintings are discussed during this tour. Your guide also draws attention to the Rijksmuseum building itself, an impressive Renaissance Revival design by Pierre Cuypers. After years of careful renovation, the museum reopened in 2013 and is widely considered a work of art in its own right.

Learn how the building’s layout, galleries and sightlines are designed to frame and enhance the collection. In true Amsterdam style, cyclists pass underneath the central passage, and if you are lucky, you may even hear a free classical concert as you enter the museum.

Rijksmuseum Private Tour Options

Pick the version that matches your interests: Highlights, In-Depth exploration, or Family-friendly storytelling. We tailor the pace, content and focus to your group.

  • a. Highlights of the Museum, Do you just want to visit the Rijksmuseum in a fun and light way? Experience the most famous paintings without too many facts or technical jargon with our Highlights of the Museum tour.
  • b. The Rijksmuseum In-Depth, Do you want to explore the art and museum in an in-depth way, hearing more about the history and techniques used to create some of the finest Dutch masterpieces and antiques?
  • c. The Rijksmuseum for Families, A light-hearted look at the museum, with younger visitors in mind. Discover how many dogs there are in the museum, and other interesting details that will keep young minds engaged.

Please let us know which version you would prefer to have when booking and we will arrange a tour to suit your request.

We also have a guided tour of the Van Gogh museum and if you are a real art lover we can combine both into a 4-hour tour.

Choose Your Guide, Not Just Your Tour

Most companies send whichever guide is free that day. We do it the other way round. Once we know who is coming and what you hope to get from the visit, we match you with the guide who fits.

That matters more in a museum than almost anywhere else. The same two hours in the Gallery of Honour can be an art history masterclass, a lesson in how paint actually behaves on canvas, or a treasure hunt that keeps a seven-year-old completely absorbed. It depends entirely on who is standing next to you.

An art historian. Kaleigh holds a BSc in Art History and an MA in Tourism and Culture, and she ties the paintings to the wider story of the city, including Rembrandt’s connections to the old Jewish quarter.

A working artist. Michael is an artist and a musician who looks at the collection through creativity and emotion rather than dates, and he is remarkably good with people who arrive convinced they are not museum people.

A Golden Age specialist. Jeroen is drawn to the 17th century, and to Rembrandt, Frans Hals and Jan Steen in particular.

Guides who genuinely enjoy children. Kaleigh in particular loves working with younger visitors in museums, turning a gallery into something much closer to a game than a lecture.

Storytellers with their own angle. Chris is a photographer who has walked this city for twenty-five years, Carolina brings Jewish heritage into the picture, and Monique is a former journalist with an eye for the detail everyone else walks past.

Can you request a particular guide? Yes, and many guests do. Tell us who you would like when you book and we will do our best to arrange it. We cannot guarantee a specific guide, because availability changes and people fall ill, but if your first choice is not free we will match you with someone whose background fits what you are after and tell you who to expect before the day.

Tell us who is coming and what you are curious about, and we will put the right person in front of you.

Educational and inspiring I absolutely enjoyed the tour. Kaleigh, the guide, did a great job. She managed to educate me about the history and culture of the Netherlands through the fantastic artworks exhibited in the museum. My dream to see Rembrandt and Vermeer came true. Thank you Amsterdam Experiences for helping me make best memories of my trip to your city.

Rijksmuseum classics - great exhibits and great stories. Rijksmuseum has always been a must for the Amsterdam tourist. I visited the museum before with the audioguide and it was OK but a private tour with Amsterdam Experience completely changed my point of view to the classical Dutch art. Our knowlegeable guide showed us Hals, Vermeer and Rembrandt and others not as monuments but as a real people - the artists with there joy and tragedies and we watch very famous paintings from a very different perspective. 5 out of 5!

We had the most wonderful tour of the Rijksmuseum thanks to Kaleigh of Bespoke Amsterdam Experiences. She is incredibly knowledgeable about art history but pitched her tour perfectly for an eleven-year-old and his parents who are art fans rather than art experts. Kaleigh was able to guide us through the crowds to see a wide variety of big hitters as well as some of her personal favourites pointing out things of interest with passion and humour at every turn. It was a total pleasure to spend a couple of hours in her company. I can’t recommend her private tour highly enough. Thank you Kaleigh for a fascinating and fun afternoon at the Rijksmuseum.

Vermeer Exhibition and Rijksmuseum tour We went to Amsterdam in May to see the Vermeer exhibition and were unable to get tickets through the Rijksmuseum website since it was sold out. Thankfully, a woman named Catherine helped us see the exhibit because she had the few tickets available in this tour. Believe me it was impossible to get tickets. At first we booked our tickets separately on two separate days which meant we could not be together for this once in a lifetime exhibition. Catherine was so wonderful because somehow she made it happen a week before we left that we would able to see the show together. What a difference she made! Also, the tour of the Rijksmuseum was very interesting and enjoyable. I am an art teacher and I am very knowledgeable about art and found the experienced guide to be full of wonderful information about each artist, time period, their artwork and the museum itself. I also commend this company for their reliability- the tour went just as planned. We loved it!

Splendid and Unforgettable Tour!! Our family of 5 from the US toured the Rijksmuseum with Edgar before our self-guided visit to the Vermeer exhibit (as part of an Amsterdam Experiences package). Edgar was exceptional in navigating us through the museum in 90 minutes, hitting both the highlights in detail (his knowledge of Rembrandt was remarkable) as well as some hidden gems (both inside and outside the building). He had marvelous anecdotes and a keen sense of humor. It was a very memorable visit. Kathrine, who coordinated our tour through Amsterdam Experiences, was outstanding in trans-Atlantic communication and promptness as well as greeting us in-person outside the very crowded museum exterior to assure a timely meeting with Edgar. You cannot go wrong with this very reliable company!

Exceptional Experience in Amsterdam! Excellent tour of the main collection at the Rijksmuseum. Used it initially for tickets to the Vermeer Exhibition. But that was followed by 3 hours of excellent guiding by art historian Edgar Foley on behalf of the Amsterdam Experience group. Terrific knowledge and really fascinating in a small group tour.

Our family had a fantastic time on your tour of the Rijksmuseum. The guide was so personable, knowledgeable, and gave so many insights and stories of the art that made it all come alive. We sat together at the atrium cafe as she talked about the Vermeer show we just visited and we shared are thoughts about what we had seen. I would highly recommend Amsterdam Experiences to anyone visiting the tour as it took the museum visit to a whole new level.

Great Rijksmuseum tour post Vermeer Amazing tour of the Rijksmuseum following our visit to the Vermeer exhibition. Our guide Edgar was very knowledgeable and took us on our tour which gave us the background on Vermeer, the Dutch artists before him and those around and after. It definitely added to our understanding of Vermeer’s work. He was great at doing a private tour in a busy museum too.

Vermeer and private Rijksmuseum tour with great guide: Edgar We got tickets to the Vermeer exhibit through this company, which included an excellent Rijksmuseum tour led by Edgar. We were met outside the museum right on time by Katherine, who got us straight into the Vermeer exhibition It was just the two of us and 1 other person. We met Edgar in the museum cafe after we spent 2 hours going through Vermeer, as guides are not allowed in that exhibition. He tailored our 90 minute Rijksmuseum tour to our interests while showing us highlights of the collection, including a discussion of the Vermeer exhibit, what is being learned about Rembrandt during the current restoration of "The NIghtwatch", how events in Rembrandt's life influenced his art, and similarities and differences among Dutch artists through paintings on view. Edgar is very knowledgable and a really nice person. He also has a strong background in the city's more modern architecture, specifically the Amsterdam school, and key locations for activities of the Dutch Resistance during World War II, so we spent extra time with him on these subjects. Edgar made a wonderful day with great art even better through his depth of knowledge, his love of these subjects and his joy in sharing and discussing them. Very satisfied with this tour company, and highly recommend Edgar as a guide.

Amazing, enriching and expert background and insight into these important works of art delivered by a vivacious and excited student of the arts. Would definitely recommend this group. First Rate!!!

Frequently Asked Questions Private Rijksmuseum Tour

Rather not work out the trams? We can arrange a private driver from your hotel to the museum entrance, and back again afterwards.

What artworks will we see during the Private Rijksmuseum Tour?

During the tour, your guide will focus on the highlights of the Rijksmuseum collection, including Rembrandt’s The Night Watch, Vermeer’s The Milkmaid and Woman Reading a Letter, works by Frans Hals, and other key pieces from Dutch art history. The exact selection is tailored to your interests, allowing time for both famous masterpieces and lesser-known works that add context to the Dutch Golden Age.

How long does the Private Rijksmuseum Tour last and what is included?

The standard tour lasts approximately 2 hours and includes a private guide who adapts the content and pace to your preferences. The focus is on quality rather than quantity, ensuring enough time to truly understand the art, the stories behind it, and the museum itself. Entrance tickets are included and after the tour you can stay until max 5pm in the Rijksmuseum.

Can I request a guide with an art history background?

Yes, and you are welcome to ask for someone by name. Kaleigh holds a BSc in Art History and an MA in Tourism and Culture. Jeroen specialises in the 17th century and the Dutch Golden Age, and Michael is a practising artist and musician who approaches the collection through technique and emotion. Tell us what you are after when you book and we will confirm who is available on your date.

How do you decide which guide we get?

We match rather than allocate. When you book we ask who is coming, how much time you have and what draws you to the museum. A family with young children, a couple of serious collectors and a first-time visitor with two hours to spare all want quite different tours, so we put a different guide with each of them. You can read our museum guides’ profiles above and request someone specific if you would like to.

Is a guided tour of the Rijksmuseum worth it?

The Rijksmuseum holds around 8,000 objects across 80 galleries, and most visitors spend a good part of their visit working out where to go rather than looking at anything. A guide solves that in the first five minutes. Unlike an audio guide, which plays the same script to everyone, your guide reads the room, answers your actual questions, skips what bores you and lingers where you are interested. And unlike a group tour, a private guide is not managing twenty strangers or holding up a numbered paddle.

Can this tour be adapted for children or families?

Very much so. We have guides who genuinely enjoy working with children in museums, and Kaleigh in particular is excellent at it. The family version swaps the art history for something closer to a hunt: how many dogs are hiding in the museum, who is doing something they should not be in a Jan Steen painting, why the man in the corner of The Night Watch is looking straight at you. Tell us the ages when you book and we will pitch it right.

Is The Night Watch always on display?

Yes. The Night Watch has remained on public view throughout Operation Night Watch, the museum’s long-running research and restoration project. At times it has been visible behind a glass enclosure while conservators work, which many visitors find fascinating in its own right. Your guide will know the situation on the day and will tell you in advance if anything significant is off view.

Does the tour also cover the Rijksmuseum building itself?

Yes, and it is worth paying attention to. Pierre Cuypers designed the building to be read alongside the collection, so the sightlines, the light and the placement of the Gallery of Honour are all deliberate. Your guide will also point out the cycle passage running straight through the middle of a national museum, which says a great deal about Amsterdam, and if the timing is lucky you may catch one of the free classical performances at the entrance.

Is this tour suitable for guests with limited mobility?

The Rijksmuseum is wheelchair accessible, with lifts and accessible routes throughout the building. The pace of the tour can be adapted, and we are happy to discuss specific needs in advance to ensure a comfortable visit.

Do we need to book tickets in advance?

When you book this private Rijksmuseum tour with us, we take care of arranging the timed-entry tickets for you. This ensures a smooth visit without the need to book museum tickets separately.

How far in advance should we book the tour?

The earlier the better, particularly if you want a specific guide. Museum time slots are limited and the Rijksmuseum sells out on busy weekends and during Dutch school holidays. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable, and in high season, roughly April to September, four weeks is safer. If you are already in Amsterdam, do still ask, because we can often make something work at short notice.

Can the tour be extended or combined with other experiences?

Yes. The tour can be extended for guests who want a deeper dive into the collection or combined with another museum, such as the Van Gogh Museum, or with a private walking tour or canal cruise on the same day. Also see our ‘ The Ultimate Day in Amsterdam tour‘ .

Is photography allowed during the tour?

Photography for personal use is allowed in most areas of the Rijksmuseum, without flash. Your guide will let you know where photography is permitted and where restrictions apply.

How much does a private Rijksmuseum tour cost?

Our private Rijksmuseum tour starts from €360 for a 2-hour private tour, including Rijksmuseum tickets and your own expert guide. The exact price depends on the size of your group, and the booking calendar shows the total for your party before you pay.

How long should you spend at the Rijksmuseum?

Most visitors spend two to three hours. Our standard private tour runs around two hours covering the highlights, after which you are welcome to stay and explore at your own pace.
