Where Do Cruise Ships Dock in Amsterdam?

You’ve booked your river or ocean cruise and it’s set to dock in Amsterdam. However, did you know that Amsterdam has more than one cruise dock, and some are not as close to the city as their names might suggest? The map below shows the locations of the different docks.

Before you start planning your shore leave, it’s a good idea to triple-check exactly which quay your ship will be using. Dock assignments can change sometimes at very short notice, and occasionally you may find yourself on the opposite side of the city from where you expected to be.

To help you prepare, here’s a run-down of the main cruise docks serving Amsterdam, from city-centre terminals to those a little further afield. All of these docks can be labelled ‘Port of Amsterdam’.

Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA)

Amsterdam Passenger Terminal building at the port

The Passenger Terminal Amsterdam, commonly referred to as PTA, is the main terminal for large ocean-going cruise ships. The PTA sits directly on the River IJ just east of Amsterdam Central Station, it offers easy access to the city centre by foot, tram or taxi.  The Movenpick Hotel is located beside the PTA.

Quay Address: Piet Heinkade 27, 1019 BR Amsterdam
Distance from Central Station: Approx. 1.5 km (about 15 minutes on foot or 5 minutes by tram). The Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA) is the primary cruise terminal for large ocean-going vessels such as Celebrity, Holland America Line, P&O etc.

River Cruise Terminal

Amsterdam is also a major hub for river cruises, especially those travelling along the Rhine and Danube. River cruise vessels do not use a single terminal, but instead dock along designated quays or mooring points along the riverbanks, mainly along De Ruyterkade and Oosterdokskade. Most of these quays are within walking distance of the city’s main sights.

You can check departure and arrival dates for river cruises in Amsterdam (PTA) via the River Cruise Calendar. For a complete 2026 and 2027 schedule including Zaandam berth assignments, updated daily, see our River Cruise Calendar for the Netherlands.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are the cruise ship terminals in Amsterdam?

Amsterdam has three main cruise terminals. The Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA) is the closest to the city centre, located on the IJ waterfront approximately 1.5 kilometres from Centraal Station and within walking distance of the historic centre. The Felison Terminal in IJmuiden handles larger vessels that cannot enter the North Sea Canal. Amsterdam Cruise Port in the western docklands handles overflow traffic.

How do I get from Amsterdam cruise terminal to the city centre?

From the Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA), the city centre is walkable in approximately 20 minutes, or a short tram ride. Bus 48 connects the PTA to Centraal Station. From the Felison Terminal in IJmuiden, a free shuttle bus is usually provided to Amsterdam Centraal, with a journey time of around 45 minutes. Always check with your cruise line in advance as shuttle arrangements vary by sailing.

How far is Amsterdam cruise terminal from the main sights?

The Passenger Terminal Amsterdam is ideally located: Anne Frank House is approximately 2 kilometres away, the Rijksmuseum around 3 kilometres, and the Van Gogh Museum 3.5 kilometres. All are reachable by tram in under 20 minutes or by a pleasant canal-side walk. Tram lines 26 and 3 connect the area to the city centre within minutes.

How much time do cruise passengers need to explore Amsterdam?

A full day in port (8 to 10 hours) allows time to visit two or three major attractions comfortably, walk the canal belt, and enjoy a meal. If you have only half a day, focus on one neighbourhood such as the Jordaan or the area around the Rijksmuseum. Pre-booking museum tickets online is essential to avoid queues, especially for the Anne Frank House which sells out weeks in advance.

Do Amsterdam cruise terminals have luggage storage?

The Passenger Terminal Amsterdam has basic facilities including a terminal building with seating, and luggage storage is available. If you want to explore the city without luggage before boarding, lockers are also available at Amsterdam Centraal station. It is advisable to confirm current terminal facilities directly with your cruise line, as services can vary by ship and operator.

Is Amsterdam accessible for cruise passengers with mobility needs?

The city centre of Amsterdam has some accessibility challenges due to cobblestones and steep canal bridges. The Passenger Terminal Amsterdam itself is accessible. Many museums including the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum are fully accessible. The canal belt and Jordaan neighbourhood have uneven surfaces that can be difficult for wheelchair users, but Amsterdam Noord and the museum quarter are generally more manageable.
