Most Avalon Waterways guests have a night or two in Amsterdam around their cruise. The Suite Ships, such as Avalon View, Avalon Envision and Avalon Panorama, often begin or end their Rhine and Tulip Time itineraries here, so there is usually time to enjoy the city before you sail or after you step off. Below you can follow the Avalon fleet live, check the 2026 and 2027 docking dates and find the exact quay your ship uses.
We turn those days into a private tour built around you: the canals, the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum, or a day out to Keukenhof in spring and the Zaanse Schans windmills. Your own guide, your own pace, no coach and no fixed group.
Back at the ship on time, guaranteed. We plan the day to your Suite Ship’s departure rather than a generic finish time, and we leave a margin for the traffic on the way back in. Get in touch with your dates.
Avalon is a regular here. Avalon View, Envision, Vista and Panorama pass through these berths constantly, so we know the quays, the walk into town and how the spring weeks behave. 4.9 stars from thousands of reviews.
Sailing the Rhine? Low water can change or cancel itineraries at short notice. See our live Rhine water level tracker before you travel.
Not sure which Avalon Waterways ship or sailing is yours? Find my river cruise matches your line and dates to the ship, its Amsterdam berth and how long you are alongside.
If Amsterdam falls mid-itinerary rather than at the start or end of your cruise, we shape the day around your actual hours alongside.
Every Avalon call below is taken live from our Amsterdam river cruise calendar, so the berths and dates look after themselves.
Avalon’s Suite Ships need a certain depth of water beneath them, so if the Rhine is running low your itinerary may shift; our Rhine water-level guide explains what that can mean.
Avalon Waterways ships berth centrally in Amsterdam. These are the quays used for Avalon Waterways calls, each with a map so you know exactly where to meet:
Piet Heinkade, city centre · 20 min walk to Centraal
Right on the IJ waterfront in the city centre, a 10 minute walk or one tram stop from Central Station. LP is your berth number, and “via Muziekgebouw” or “via Vriesseveem” simply tells you which walkway leads to your gangway.
Behind Central Station, west side · 5 min walk to Centraal
Behind Amsterdam Central Station, on the west side, so you are inside the station within 5 minutes of stepping ashore. The Dam, the canal ring and the Jordaan are all within an easy and very pleasant walk.
Western harbour · 15 min taxi or ship shuttle
A working harbour about 4 kilometres west of the centre, used when the central berths are full. Nothing lies in walking distance, so plan on a ship shuttle, a 15 minute taxi, or a private pickup right at the gangway.
Behind Central Station, east side · 8 min walk to Centraal
Just east of Central Station, 10 minutes on foot from the main station hall. NEMO Science Museum, the OBA library and the Maritime Museum are close by, around Oosterdok, and the old centre starts a 10 minute walk away.
Avalon states its arrival rule plainly: flights into Amsterdam must land by 3.30pm and guests must be aboard by 5pm. That is the constraint everything else hangs off. It is also why so many Avalon guests land the day before, which turns a stressful arrival into a proper free day.
Romantic Rhine southbound is generous in a way people miss when they skim the brochure. The ship sits in Amsterdam overnight on the first night and stays through a full second day before sailing on towards Cologne, so there are two nights and a whole day in the city built into an eight day cruise. Tulip Time, Active and Discovery in Holland and Belgium, Highlights of Holland and Belgium and the fifteen day Magnificent Europe all start here too.
The Suite Ships take around 166 guests with 47 crew, and the Panorama Suites are the thing Avalon is genuinely known for: wall-to-wall windows that open seven feet wide, and beds turned to face the river rather than a wall. Avalon Choice excursions run in three tiers, Classic, Discovery and Active, with an Adventure Host and an Adventure Center of bikes and e-bikes aboard.
Two practical notes. Avalon is honest that the mooring position is set by the port and only released 24 to 72 hours before embarkation, and that ships may raft up alongside each other, so meeting arrangements need to stay flexible. And Avalon does not accept children under eight or run any children’s activities, so multi-generational groups usually build their family time into the days ashore instead.
Avalon built its Suite Ships around the view, with beds that face the window and open-air balconies. Guests who care that much about how they see a place are usually the ones who get least out of a fixed coach itinerary.
Avalon days in Amsterdam tend to be about the classics done properly: the canals, the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh, and the countryside that sits within an hour of the quay. Privately, you can do all of it in the order that suits your energy and the weather, rather than the order printed in the programme.
Avalon runs a lot of Rhine and Tulip Time itineraries through here, so we know the spring crush well and how to route around it. Your ship usually ties up at the Passenger Terminal, along De Ruijterkade or at Coenhaven.
