Most Scenic guests have a night or two in Amsterdam around their cruise. The all-inclusive Space-Ships, such as Scenic Jasper, Scenic Opal and Scenic Jade, often begin or end their Rhine and Dutch Waterways itineraries here, so there is usually time to enjoy the city before you sail or after you step off. Below you can follow the Scenic fleet live, check the 2026 and 2027 docking dates and find the exact quay your ship uses.
We turn those days into a private tour shaped entirely around you: the canals, the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum, or a day out to Keukenhof in spring and the Zaanse Schans windmills. Your own guide, your own pace, no coach and no fixed group.
Back on board comfortably, guaranteed. If your Space-Ship is at Zaandam rather than the city, the drive back matters, so we build it into the plan instead of leaving it to chance. Tell us your ship and we will time the day to it.
We know where Scenic actually ties up. Scenic is one of the few lines that regularly uses Zaandam as well as the central quays, and that changes the whole shape of a day ashore. We plan for the berth you have, not the one most ships get. 4.9 stars from thousands of reviews.
Sailing the Rhine? Low water can change or cancel itineraries at short notice. See our live Rhine water level tracker before you travel.
Not sure which Scenic ship or sailing is yours? Find my river cruise matches your line and dates to the ship, its Amsterdam berth and how long you are alongside.
If Amsterdam is a call during the cruise rather than your start or finish, we work the day around the hours your Space-Ship is alongside.
Every Scenic call below is drawn live from our Amsterdam river cruise calendar, including the Zaandam dates.
Scenic will usually keep you moving if the Rhine is low, whether by swapping ships or laying on coaches, and you can see exactly how the river is running on our Rhine water levels page.
Scenic ships berth centrally in Amsterdam. These are the quays used for Scenic calls, each with a map so you know exactly where to meet:
Piet Heinkade, city centre · 20 min walk to Centraal
Right on the IJ waterfront in the city centre, a 10 minute walk or one tram stop from Central Station. LP is your berth number, and “via Muziekgebouw” or “via Vriesseveem” simply tells you which walkway leads to your gangway.
Behind Central Station, west side · 5 min walk to Centraal
Behind Amsterdam Central Station, on the west side, so you are inside the station within 5 minutes of stepping ashore. The Dam, the canal ring and the Jordaan are all within an easy and very pleasant walk.
Western IJ waterfront · 12 min walk to Centraal.
On the western IJ bank, a 12 minute walk from Central Station. The berth borders the Jordaan, which puts the Noordermarkt, the Nine Streets and the Anne Frank House all within a 20 minute stroll of your gangway.
Central Zaandam · 12 min train to Amsterdam
Beside the Zaantheater in the centre of Zaandam, minutes from the shops and the station. Binnen and Buiten refer to the inner and outer berth positions, and the windmills of Zaanse Schans are a 10 minute ride away.
Scenic schedules European embarkation for after 2pm. Read that as a gift rather than a delay. If you fly in the night before, or even the same morning, the whole first half of the day belongs to you, and it is the part of the trip Scenic itself cannot fill because the ship is not open yet.
Jewels of Europe, the fifteen day run from Amsterdam to Budapest, gives you an overnight here and a full second day. Rhine Highlights is the eight day version down to Basel or Zurich, and Scenic sells extended Rhine Highlights with Amsterdam and Romantic Rhine and Moselle with Amsterdam variants precisely because guests keep asking for longer in the city. Windmills, Tulips and Belgian Delights is the round trip.
The Space-Ships take up to 163 guests with around 59 crew, and Scenic’s inclusions are unusually deep even by luxury river standards: a butler for every suite, tipping and gratuities covered, drinks throughout the day, and e-bikes included across the European fleet. Scenic Freechoice lets you pick excursions by pace, and Scenic Enrich puts on private events that no independent operator could replicate.
So what is missing? Only the things a ship cannot do. The Amsterdam Freechoice list is good, with a canal cruise, a walking tour with a herring tasting and a countryside e-bike ride among the choices, but it is a list, and it runs on the ship’s hours with the ship’s group. A private day is for the guests who want the Mauritshuis in The Hague, a photography walk at first light, a serious Rembrandt morning, or simply the version of Amsterdam that suits two people rather than twenty.
Scenic is genuinely all-inclusive, and Scenic Freechoice already gives you options ashore. But Freechoice is still a menu someone else wrote, with a group attached and a departure time on it.
Scenic guests are used to a butler and a certain standard on board, which makes a shared coach a jarring step down. A private guide and car keeps the day ashore pitched at the same level as the rest of the cruise.
Scenic is also one of the few lines that regularly ties up at Zaandam as well as central Amsterdam, so we plan the pickup around where your Space-Ship actually berths rather than assuming the city centre.
Cruising with Scenic? Tell us your ship and dates and we will match the day to them.
Sailing with Scenic? Alongside your tours, we can arrange a private Schiphol airport transfer or a chauffeur between the airport, your hotel and your Scenic Space-Ship, timed around your embarkation and disembarkation. Arrange a private transfer.
We look after guests from every river and ocean line calling in the Netherlands. Pick your cruise line to see the tours, berths and docking details that apply to your ship:
Scenic Space-Ships berth centrally, most often at the Passenger Terminal, along De Ruijterkade or at Westerdoksdijk, and they also call at Zaandam, a short drive north. Your exact berth is shown in the schedule above.
Not at all. We meet you right at the Zaandam quay and you are in central Amsterdam in about twenty minutes, or we can start with the Zaanse Schans windmills, which are on your doorstep there.
Freechoice is generous, but it still runs to the ship’s timetable in a group. A private day is for guests who want the same standard ashore that they get on board, entirely on their own terms.
Scenic Pearl, Scenic Opal, Scenic Jewel, Scenic Jade, Scenic Jasper and Scenic Amber are the regulars here. The schedule above shows which ship is in on which date.
The sooner the better for spring and peak dates, but we can often arrange a private guide at shorter notice too.
